What shocks for HF 1.6 Mk2

Unread post by HF1600 »

I am rebuilding my car (1970, one of the first out of the mill, don't have chassis # here with me).
Engine is almost ready (fitted with new forged pistons!).
Now need to replace all 4 shocks.
My car is very light, with 4 alluminium panels and persplex back and back-side windows, etc...
I intend to keep it for fast Sunday motoring with my wife plus the occasional CSAI "enthusiastic" regularity event.

So this is the car and its intended use.
I would like to have your opinion as to whether I should fit De Carbon shocks or maybe 4 Bilsteins.

Thanks

Michele

Are the Bilsteins also monotube high pressure gas shockabsorbers?

Bilstein bought the patent from De Carbon long time ago, but I am not sure if everything they make is according to the De Carbon principle.

Bilstein used to make two version high pressure gas: the normal street version and the sports version. Personally I would not choose the sports version. Certainly if it is for sunday driving around the church.

The De Carbons I am having remade are the standard street version, which should work well with the standard suspension.

This is the point. It's not for driving around the church...as I wrote it's for "fast Sunday motoring", which in Italy means something close to special stage driving in the mountains (among packs of German superbikes..hehe..)
My point is I am seeking something sporty but able to leave some degrees of creature comfort to the car.

Oh

Ok. I understand what you mean. I have been in a Zagato1600 with an Italian at the wheel "enjoying" what you call fast Sunday motoring through the mountains. I call it suicidal driving. It is not going to be repeated.

Anyway, if the springs are standard, I would mount standard shocks, either Bilstein or De Carbon. Spring leaves themselves already absorb some shock. The high pressure gas shock absorbers makes it just perfect.

The springs have to be in good condition. Mounting stiff shocks to compensate for tired springs is not going to work.
