engine/head identification

Unread post by Jacko »

I am a little confused about engine/head numbers on an accident Fulvia 1.S. that i´ve bought.
The engine number is 818.303 and 015630. This must be from a 1.3S 2.Series right?
The head ís 818.140 and 2239540. What means the 140? Is this a 1.2HF head?

Jacko,

Yes 818-140 was the type number for 1.2HF, but the casting was used for all 1.3s until it was replaced by the 818-302 casting used on SIIs and SIIIs. You ill note that whilst the 818-140 number is cast into the ehad, the 818-303 is stamped onto the rear cover of the engine

818-303 is the engine type number used on 1.3S engines (90BHP) from late 1968 onwards.

1.3HFs used the same casting but the engine was stamped 818-342

818-302 engines were fitted to S1 Rallye coupes and to SII sedans (87BHP).

I hope that this is all clear.

I think i got it, thanks Paul. There is also another head in the package i bought. The seller said it should be
a 1.2HF head. Can i identify whether this is right? i will examine it tomorow.

I would think that your best clue would be the date stamped on the head together with the fact that a genuine Lancia HF head of that period would be nicely finished inside the ports (as were 1.3HF and S1 1.6HF heads). If the head is complete with valve gear, I would expect to see polished rockers too.

Whilst a 1.2HF car would be interesting (only 88 made) the cylinder head is not likely to be special - except as noted above.
