S1 dash instruments -fuel, water, oil pressure

Unread post by Mike »

I have a 1968 Series 1 coupe Rallye 1.3 and the three small dash instruments have no label markings on them whatsoever. All they have are the needle and increment markings. Car is original RHD.
Is this original? Is it possible to fit repalcement fuel, water temp. and oil press. gauges with the with lettering "water, fuel, oil" on them? Does the whole dash instrument pod have to be removed for this?
Any help/tips most appreciated.

One other thing... the Series 1 coupes often had a pull-push switch on the dash, in addition to the light switch. What was this used for?

Thanks,
Mike

Hello.

I have a S1 instrument cluster available - they are actually fairly easy to find. I have never seen one with the nomenclature missing. Replacement is fairly simple. Just remove the chromed ring nuts from the panel light dimmer and trip reset and the two concealed nuts (one inside the glove box), you can then remove the wooden trim (which is actually plastic on S1s and therefore fragile - be careful). The centre cluster is secured by some Phillips screws. You can then remove the plug carrying the wiring and replace the unit.

I think that the second push-pull switch that you mention is the windscreen washer - pull it out, it is spring loaded, and as it returns it pumps the water.

best wishes

Paul
