Transaxle noise

Unread post by Matt »

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the Lancia world, having just acquired a 1970 european spec coupe with the 5 speed transmission on sunday. The car is in very nice shape, runs great and is fun to drive. The bad news- the gearbox 'chatters' in fifth gear. It is quiet when coasting and under acceleration the pitch changes as I move the lever around but it is perfectly quiet in every other gear.

I primarily drive the car in the city (San Francisco) so fifth gear isn't used much but I don't want to do any long term harm. How long do I have before it blows up? How difficult is it to repair? Is there a good Lancia mechanic in my area?

Any input would be appreciated.

Congratulations on your acquisition, Matt.

Fortunately for you, there are quite a few Lancia obsessionists in the Bay Area. I recommend that you talk to Steve Snyder, who lives in Santa Rosa. He no longer works on the cars for a living but he used run a shop in Sunnyvale called Small Car Enthusiasts and Fulvias were one of his bread and butter items. Please e-mail me for his telephone number at: flaminia@sbcglobal.net
