Kontaktlose Zündung

Hat jemand Erfahrung mit Kontaktloser Zündung in einer Fulvia? Lohnt sich der Umbau?

Sorry for replying in English.
After hearing the claims of some people who said electronic ignition, whether with or without contact breaker, improved the cars performance, I installed a contact breaker less electronic ignition on one of my Fulvia's to try for myself. It does not make a difference compared to the standard ignition, when properly adjusted and in good condition as all my Fulvia's are. Performance nor fuel consumption changed.
I already expected this result on theoretical grounds. The supply voltage remains the same and the ignition coil remains the same. The voltage at the plugs is thus also the same.

Better put your energy in makings sure the standard ignition is 100%. That means good quality points, I use Bremi, adjusted to the right gap ( 0,45mm giving a dwell angle in the low fifties) and a new condenser. The condenser has to be renewed every two years. The Bremi points last a long time, but checking adjustement every 10.000 km is necessary.

Also the advance mechanism should work properly without backlash. Better put your money in a stroboscope with dwell angle meter so you can time the ignition exactly and check for erratic behaviour when moving the throttle by hand.

Also check the voltage drop between the plus terminal of the battery and the + of the ignition coil with the engine running. If it is more than 1,5 volt, you loose too much voltage in the wiring. Clean the contacts and replace the fuses with new ones.

Use good plugs, the NGK BP7ES are excellent.

As a rule of thumb: if starting becomes difficult, check the points; if the engine misfires under acceleration: check the plugs. This assumes of course everything else is correct.

Two of my Fulvia's now run on the NGK BPR7EIX iridium spark plugs. This gives a small improvement in performance and fuel consumption as expected theoretically due to the corona effect of the very sharp electrode. Installing iridium plugs has the same effect as raising the spark voltage. A (simple) elecronic igniton does not raise the voltage.

There are electronic ignitions with special coils which do raise the voltage. They are expensive and not really necessary unless the engine is run at revs well over 6000 rpm.

Note that the 1300cc Fulvia engine produces 90HP. This means that it is already highly efficient.

Thanks Huib,

my fulvia is a coupe with the 1200cc engine. i think the points are the same for this engine. if i compare the accelaration of my car with another fulvia with a 1300cc engine, i lost more then 10ps.

Indeed, the story is the same for the 1200. It has about the same power / 1000 cc ratio as the 1.3 engine.
I find the 1200's pretty good on acceleration. The final reduction ratio compensates for the smaller engine.

wunderbar

endlich ist die lästige einstellerei vorbei.
sofort einbauen.
aber nur mit garantie , 2 jahre

ich war einmal in den mitte 70iger
jahren ein versuchskaninchen
der firma swisstronic.
der einbau war eine katastrophe-
als laie war ich überfordert.
batterie fertig.
rs wars
