Running problem on Kugelfischer car

Unread post by Chris »

Dear All

I have a 1.8 litre Flavia with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection which doesn't want to run properly. Any advice would be most welcome. The engine will start quite readily, indeed perfectly normally. The car will then pull away normally, feeling quite healthy and full of enthusiasm. Within three or four miles though, the engine seems to lose power, to become unresponsive to the throttle, and will die unless I drop the clutch. I can then keep it going for a bit but it will not run under load. Once the engine has rested and cooled down it will restart and the whole process can be repeated.

There is a warning light to indicate low fuel pressure and I know this works. It does not light up to indicate that lack of pressure from the main fuel delivery pump is the problem. I've swapped the condenser and plugs with no real effect. Any ideas gratefully received.

Thanks

Chris

Chris,

When you start from cold, does the red light, indicating that the enrichment device is active light up?
It is the same light as the handbrake warning light.
Seems that the car runs fine as long the enrichment device is in, which is some 3 to 4 miles (more precisely until engine water temperature gets over 40 to 45 degrees C.
This would mean that the normal fuel metering is not working properly.

Did you clean renew al 3 fuel filters ?
one in the boot under the spare wheel, but if that is clogged your low pressure light comes on
The 2nd under the bonnet, in the holder where your pressure switch is mounted, I wonder whether the pressure light comes on if this is clogged
The 3rd filter sits in the actual Kugelfischer pump where the fuel line enters the unit.

Have you got the Kugelfischer shop manual for the car?, makes discussion a bit easier.

Hello Chris,

As Bert said, filters are the first thing to look at, even if the low pressure warning light works because when filters are dirt the light starts to flash and it isn't easy to check (so much easier to see when driving at night, that's how I realised it was time to change the first filter on my car).

Refering to what you discribe, I feel like your car does not have enough fuel. It would be quite easy to check : modify the position of the lever on wich the enrichment device pulls when engine is cold, you can screw in (ie. 1 turn) the screw at the end of the lever and see if your engine has more power and torque when warm.

Let us know how it runs.

Florent

PS : Sorry for my english writing, words I use are probably not the exact ones.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The orange low pressure light is bright enough to see so I'm confident it's not lack of pressure in the delivery to the high pressure pump. And the enrichening device on the fuel metering mechansim is moving - maybe not enough or too much, but it is moving.

I do have a copy of the manual and I hope to have another look at the problem this weekend. I think I might start by looking to see how easy it is to check and clean the final filter, which is the one that is after the low pressure warning light sensor.

Will keep you posted.

I have now rebuildt my 67 Flavia PF to an Iniezone !!

Of course not without problems, but I now just have the fine tuneing left (I hope ???)
I have had the same problem. I have checked all my fuel filters, and this has caused som trouble..I have adjusted the enriching device. And this seem to solve my major problem.

Does anybody know the length for the connecting rod beetween the butterfly and the injection pump tool:8015366 ??
and the thickness of tool:8013351 for setting the enriching device ?

Hello everybody,

my problems with the iniezione coupé are the injectors, the inner system parts are defected by rust due zo long standing time. I could buy new ones but the price is between 900 and 1250 € per piece (not car). Therefore I started to converse the car to an 815.330, using the Solex 32 PAIA 8.
Two questions to those, who might have undertaken the same: I don´t find so far the top cover with an adequate whole for the oilmessurestick. Is it the cover nr 1107962? Where could I get one? Any idea? Another point: of course the pump will be chanched (Bendix or Pierburg), but do I have to change other elctrical hardware?
Thanks a lot for your help.
