Lubrication of sliding sleeves and universal joints

Unread post by Hermann »

Hi Flaministi,

Reassembling the gearbox ('64 model) I need to know which grease should be used for lubricating the sliding sleeves of the inner universal joints (spares table 81, no- 26, item 1390214, also for the universal joints, which seems to be different.

Thanks for your help

I think Martin Cliffe wrote somewhere it has to be some kind of thick oil, as grease will be pushed outwards and clog on the rubber dustcover. A magnificent product is "Liquid Grease" from Penrite. This tacky grease can be used in the steering box too and because of it's viscosity, it's not leaking (compared to oil which is much more fluid). This "liquid grease" on the other hand keeps moving, thus creating better lubrication. Keep an eye on the space between the rubber dustcover and the exhaust when rebuilding!

Hi Jean:

Thanks for the suggestion of "Liquid Grease." I never heard of the product before. I have several leaky steering boxes.

The better thing to do with a leaking stearing box is replacing the oil seals
This is not as complex as it seams since modern standard sizes can replace the original Paulstra seals

Original Paulstra seal 31.7*42.8*4.75 can be replaced by 32*43*7
Original Paulstra seal 24.68*35*4.75 can be replaced by 25*35*6
My steering box hasn't leaked since, using the prescribed EP-90 oil
