Aurelia B20 instruments
Aurelia B20 instruments
Does anyone know precisely when Lancia changed the instruments fitted to B20s from the style used in third and fourth series cars to that generally used in the fifth and sixth series cars? Did some late fourth series cars have the later style of instruments? If so, from what chassis number?
Re: Aurelia B20 instruments
The early 4th series cars have the older instruments (s. 2-4) with the big plastic indicators, grey. The later 4th series have the black instruments, unique to the 4th and similar to Ferraris (and thus quite expensive to find).
5th and 6th have the Jaeger instruments, similar to Flaminias. I don't believe any 4th series had these instruments.
As to the change in the 4th series - not sure when that is. There was a green 4th s. (B20S 1099?) that is somewhere in the US, and it had the earlier instruments.
I think the change in the instruments is tied into a change in the dash as well. There is a small difference in the earlier cars, where the dash sits about 1" further forward (measured from the rear 1/4 windows) than in the later cars. Not sure why.

My car, B20 3148, built in May 1954 has the old style (grey with plastic pointers) instruments.
I have seen 4th series with completey different instruments.

Hello,
My B20S #1245 has the late Jaeger instruments, these are not the same as the ones fitted on the 5th/6th serie cars but they are from Jaeger as well.
I've got pictures from B20S #1218 and B20 #3633 and the instruments are also the late type ones.

Re: Aurelia B20 instruments
I would suggest, however without any proof, that the change of instruments corresponds to the year of manufacture:
In 1954, that is up to car B20-3445 and car B20S-1130 they would have the old Veglia instruments.
In 1955, until the end of the 4th series, that is cars B20-3696 and B20S-1255 they would have the special Jaeger instruments, only found on those late 4th series.
This would fit with the information given on the cars above.
One person who could confirm this or give us more information would be the President of the Registro Aurelia Italiano, who maybe reads this forum.

Re: Aurelia B20 instruments
As is usualy the case, the answer is right in the parts book. The Borletti speedometer & tachometer were used up to B20-3420 & B20S-1130. The Jeager's were used From B20-3421 & B20S-1131, through the end of the 4th Series. There were two different instruments used in the 5th & 6th production, but you can hardly tell the difference.

Thanks to all respondents; this seems to be the answer - I will have to get my hands on a parts book now!

Thank you for the correct information. I should have looked in the parts book, stupid of me!
Now what is that difference you mention between 5th and 6th series instruments ? This could be a test, for the real Aurelia specialist! I am going to check the parts book immediately to see if I find it there!

Florent -
you mentioned your car is B20S 1245. Do you know from where it was originally sold? There are a number of the later B20S 4th series (say from #1225 on) that were sold in the US, and I think imported to San Francisco. I seem to recall seeing about 5 serieal numbers very close together that were still located somewhere in the Bay area in the late 1990's.
Its just a guess, but I was wondering if Lancia sent a bunch of cars there, and if we can piece together what the size of the package was....
Thanks,
Geoff

Re: Aurelia B20 instruments
Geoffrey,
I bought my car in Italy (in Torino of course !) 3 years ago and all I know is that the car has been imported in Italy in 1992 but where did it come from ???
I should have taken time to contact the previous owner (I bought the car from a classic cars dealer) to get more informations about the car but I think that it spent part of it's life in France because the Lancia blue plate has "type B20-2500" stamped on it, in addition to the original serial number and this corresponds with the french type for B20s on registration documents and my father's car, a 5th serie car, originally sold in France also has this extra stamping on the blue plate.
That's all I know about my car but maybe the Italian Registro would be able to tell us more about it, maybe where and who it was sold to.
Do you know if cars sent to the US had special specifications ?
I know the very last car from the 4th serie (#1255) and it is also in France, at least since the beginning of the 70's.
Regards
