Hello,
I´m from Germany and currently considering buying a beautyful Kappa 2.0 from an old man (1st owner since 96). It´s automatic which I prefer on this car and in excellent shape all on the inside and on the outside. It`s like new and has only run for 41.000 km. I was almost sure this is the one to go for and now I´m looking at this forum and see that this car has major faults, high costs and things like this... Guess what: I`m deeply concerned if I can afford it when using it everyday to get to work etc. What means expensive when talking about the cars needs like parts, maintenance etc? What means major faults? Is there anything I should especially worry about?
Awaiting some (hopefully) positive comments on this car. I really love it and I do not often see a car that is love on first sight.
Best Wishes,
-Stefan
The internet makes it even worse
Re: The internet makes it even worse
I honestly, really don't know where the stories come from. I bought a second hand kappa 2.0 back in 1998. The car had done 160.000 km. In the next 4 years I have driven another 220.000 km without any mechanical problems, just regular service. Sure, after 380.000 km the car needed an overhaul so i sold it. I drive a Saab now, but that is because I never buy the same type of car twice.

I also agree with erwin about kappa.Whatever they say is wrong.of course you must doing the check-up but nothing more!it s a brilliant car. best regards

Hi,
I bought Lancia Kappa 2.0 '96 with 85K km. I've made almost 35K km using this car and unfortunatelly I had some major problems with my Lancia.
1. Timming belt broke off (inspite of it was a new one) so I had to replace motor (~$1200 Eur)
2. AC problems - I had to replace pressure gauge (~100 Eur)
3. Time of the durability of breaking discs is very short (pair ~200 Eur)
4. Breaking pads are also quite expensive with compering to others (pair ~50 Eur)
I think that everything depends on what kind of car you get. Frinston, my friend bought at the same time as me also Lancia Kappa, even it was older model then mine '95 and he hasn't had any problems till today (86K km).
I hope you purchase also luck model like my friend did
,
Good luck
Greg

Re: The internet makes it even worse
I'd like to add from my experience. I drive my second K for now, all bought second hand. I hav't experienced any problems nither with the first car (2.0 20V) or the current (2.4 20V). Besides that I find them comfortable and fun to drive. For it's size it'a a very smooth car, driving in a city is not more difficult than with most middle size cars.
Mechanicaly, one should pay attention to the timing belt replacement period. Apparently factorys replacement recommendations every 120K km are overoptimistic. Replace every 80K and it should work well. Snaps it before it's your service workshops foult.
Appart from that one may probably drive 300K km without problems.

Re: The internet makes it even worse
I own a Kappa 2.0 20v 1998, 3rd owner with the same dealer.
I run on LPG/Gas and have just put 300.001 Km on it without major problems.
Mainanance is crucial and Drivebelts need to be replaced. Further no major cost, I just
have replaced the front dampers and springs and the rear swing arms. I must say it runs like new.
So the whole deal will be to maintain and service and have the regular cost or have problems.....
