Kappa and the Screaming AC

Unread post by Tommy »

Hi,
My wonderful Kappa 2.0 -97 has got a small but irritating problem as soon as the weather becomes colder; The heating system begins to scream when starting the cold engine in the mornings, after a while the whining fades away. Apparently there is a problem with some kind of a frozen bearing in the system.

Anyone got an easy fix?

Grateful for any advice!

Brgds,

Have you checked the tightening of the belt of water-pump? Your problem sounds like typical and could be easy fixed.

Thanks Cobra!
Meanwhile I've got it fixed and it was -as you said- the slack belt but also the liquid seems to leak out so something was changed.

The next problem is that the heater doesn't heat the interior. The cooling water temperature is ok (says the garage), but the heater doesn't blow warm air. Also the termometer shows only around 52 degrees. The car has the Full Auto AC. Any idea? Could there somewhere be a switch that has to be turned to "Winter" position...

Merry Xmas,
Tommy

There are no winter-switches in modern cars (last 15-20 years).

I am not expert in your type of car but generally speaking your problem could be in thermo-switch. That thermo-switch controls the temperature of cooling liquid. When the engine is cold, the switch is closed. Otherwise the engine would be cold for all time what is harmful. The engine must reach the working temperature as quick as possible. When the engine reaches the right temperature, the switch opens the "pass" to the rest of cooling system. Otherwise, the engine can burn itself. (That "rest" is responsible for the heating of the passengers.)

If the switch is bad, it is open all the time and your engine can not reach the working temperature. If the working temperature can not be reached, heating of the interior will not work. Simple.

The thermo-switch should not costs more than 30 EUR. It can be replaced within 10 minutes by the person with basic technical knowledge and average skills.

Hope it helps.
