S2 Gearbox Woes...

Unread post by dvillijg »

Hi Everyone,

I'm busy restoring a S2 Fulvia that hasn't been on the road for +- 15 years. Original issue was a engine knock and the engine has since been rebuilt and subframe completely restored. The history I have on the car is that it was running very well up until the engine issue and gearbox was good with easy shifting and no strange noises.

Now ready to mount the engine I changed the gearbox oil. The differential side oil was black with a little sludge. I guess this is expected considering the gearbox hasn't run in a long time. The metal shards stuck to the drain plug magnet is acceptable I would say - see photo. The gearbox side oil was also black and with thick sludge. The main concern is the metal fragments that were stuck to the drain plug magnet - please see photos. I don't have much experience when it comes to gearboxes and need some advice from the experts on the group around where these metal fragments could have originated from and what the best course of action is.

Using the shifting stick I am able to shift into all gears without any issue.

Any advice appreciated.

I bet it is the cage of one of the ball bearings.

I have an S 2 gearbox with overhauled. All new bearings but the case is slightly bent. We could transfer all internals.
