Tracing back the car history

Unread post by Ibrant »

Hello everyone,

As an owner of 1.3S S3 1975, I’d like to know how do I trace back the car’s history? The car was previously owned in Belgium and imported to Hungary, yet how can I know the full history from of a car?

A second question is how experts finds out about the authenticity of such information? Such as chassis and engine number?

Tnx

Can you first try to give the chassis number (called VIN by some) and the maybe also the engine number?

The chassis number is in the upper gutter for the engine bay bonnet, right hand side of the car. Lift the bonnet up, and have a look in the gutter, top side, right side of the car. The number is in two parts "car type * serial"

The engine identification is stamped on the fitting were the starter motor fits in the engine. It contains the the engine type number (will probably be 818.303) and the serial.

With that it is possible to get the aprox date of manufacturing. Getting the full history of the car is not easy, maybe if you got the papers from previuos owners.

unless you are lucky enough to have the original documentation from when the car was sold, it is not possible to match the engine number with the chassis. the best you can do is determine to the best of your ability the dates of manufacture and then see how likely it would be that they are a match.
i was very lucky when i got my fulvia to receive the original documents from when the car was sold new. i doubt this happens very often.
