How to open S1 Sport bonnet

I finally found some new rubber buffers for the bonnet to rest on. Placing them without being fastened I lowered the bonnet and it was standing too high. I took them out and lowered the bonnet again to determine how low it was with no buffers but then found that I couldn't open it again with the release lever under the dash. I could hook a loop of wire between the bonnet and wing and lift the external release but nothing I tried would work. The workshop manual gave help on how to open the bonnet when the release cable has broken but only for the sedan.
Does anybody have an idea ?

Success. with helping hands to replace the upward pressure of the rubber buffers and a pull on the leaver, up it came.
