Park lights stay on and drain battery

Unread post by Alan »

On my 1994 Thema LS 2.0 Turbo, the park lights (front and rear) stay on even when the ignitition is off. This of course drains the battery. I tried pulling out the fuses but at least the left one still stays on. I presume it is a realy malfunction, but don't know which one?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hello Alan,
I had a Y10 once where the mechanism at the key lock was damaged and the key would go straight to the parking light position without pressing the button. Had to strip the lock and reshape the detent.
Do your parking lights go off when the engine is running?
You could simply remove the bulbs - probably remove the bulbs from the near side and leave the dashboard switch set to that side, then you could still park with the off-side lights on if neccessary. Although that would still leave the instrument panel lamp on I suppose.
The wiring is fairly simple, contacts in the key switch then the switch on the dashboard and from there to left and right lamps. So unless there has been some fiddling with the wiring the only suspect is the key switch - how long have you owned this car or previous Lancias?

Leo,
thanks. Unfortunately I don't think that's it. The dash lights are on as well, which isn't the case for the Park lights. The strange thing is that when I leave the car, it is fine (i.e. lights are out). Then sometime in the next hours they come on. Maybe a short with the cooling thermostat?

Sorry if I insulted your knowledge!
This seems very bizarre. I cannot think how the lights could come on after a long delay. The cooling system electrics all work the opposite way around - they go "off" when cold. So it would need a "change-over" relay sort of problem but the one for the fan is not that type. How about the delay for the interior light? The electronics for this is in the overhead lamp unit itself. Not sure what you could do there though. The electronics for the remote locking is there also so if you pull that fuse the remote locking will not work - worth trying temporarily though.

Will have a think about this. Which lights come on though the "side" or "parking" lights?
