turbine in 88 v8 turbo

Unread post by lech »

Hi,
I've just bought '88 2.0 i.e. turbo v8 and I have impression that the turbine starts working from 3 gear - with 1 and 2 gear the car speeds up very slowly (especially on high rpm's) and gets a real kick from "3" - is that correct?

Hello Lechu,

I want to respect the fact we do speak english here, so please contact me directly to my e-mail address.
I will feel more comfortable in polish:-))

Yes, it can be embarrassingly slow when the revs are below 3000rpm. Always make sure you are in the right gear and keep the revs up!

Hi Lech,

since 1994 I had a Thema with the same engine (brought it up to 300.000 km without a problem). It is true there is not much power below 2.200 U/min, but the the car accelerates like a wild beast, especially if one is in the lower gears.

Is the car reaching its proposed topspeed (210km/h or better)? If no, you may habe to check the waste gate (may stay open), the turbo itself (may not run properly due to a bearing failure, the pressure limiting safety valve (makes a shotcut between the chargers in- and output), the tube to the throtte (might have been punctured or broken, especially within the bellow section)

If topspeed is not approached the might be a failure within the gas pump or the gas filter (choked) so that there is not enough pressure or there might be a problem with the control electronics even though there is no dependence on the the gear in use.

Hope that gives some ideas.

Regards

Thanks but the problem is that everything is OK from 3rd gear (it jumps like a motorbike from 2800/3000 RPM) - I have problems only with low gears - the car is slow not only on low RPM's but on high's as well. I have no idea what's going on :-) Anyway, turbo is leaking a little bit (and takes some oil) and must be regrinded, but on high gears it has no effect of that lack of power from turbine....

If you remove the hose going into the turbine (input side of turbo) you can grasp the turbne shaft and rotate it (and check for play by trying to move up,down, in and out)
The turbine should rotate very freely. Up, down movement should be virtually nil.
A common problem with these turbos is the build up of burnt oil on the back of the exhaust turbine which does several things...
1. it can make the turbine shaft stiff (especially when cold) which affects the performance of the turbo as it requires more exhaust pressure to turn
2. the build up starts moving the whole shaft towards the exhaust housing - eventually the exhaust turbine will hit the casing

If oil changes have been neglected - or cheap oil used you can get a blockage in the oil feed pipe to the turbo - at the hot point caused by the bracket that bolts to the exhaust manifold. This can cause the turbo to seize - I have seen one with the turbine shaft snapped in two!

The exhaust housing will sometime crack as well - I have seen all of the above on my 2 89 8v turbos. and os several 2nd hand turbos that I have purchased in the past
