Cooling Fan Stays On

Unread post by Brian Hilton »

Hi Can anyone help me for a change!
I just bought another Thema 1993 Series 3 2.016v Vis Le Auto, one of the last RHD cars.

The problem is that the engine cooling fan runs all the time even with the engine turned off!
We have checked Fan Relay, Fuse, Thermo switch and everything else we can find or think of.
The only way to stop the Fan is to disconnect the 3 wire multiplug adjacent to the top radiator hose.
Tempoarily we have wired in a manual switch wired through a relay so I can at least turn it on or off without having to reconnect the multiplug.

HELP!

one of my 8v turbos did the same - it was the Thermo switch!

Hi Brian,

thats caused by a 50A relay behind the radio. You can get to it by opening the coverage at the copilots side below the locker box. Then loosen the carpet on the side wall of the middle console and reach around the corner . There are three relais, one of it is the reason (IMHO the middle one). You may get a better feeling about the location by removing the radio and and using a flashlight to illuminate the inside of the middle console.

It´s a very typical Thema 3 failure.

Cracked It!

Strange though it may seem, a couple of weeks after I reported the problem, the aircon stopped blowing cold air.

I Called out a mobile specialist who diagnosed , after he put his test equipment on, that it was almost empty of gas which suprised me as up to then it had been putting out lots of very welcome cold air.

After regassing and adding a lubricant and a dye, we started the car up, when it reached the normal temperature at which point the fan would cut in, the fan cut in! and has been working ok ever since.
so it would appear that because of the close tie up between the aircon and the cooling fan, low gas was the cause of the problem.
I have since spoken to a Fiat Garage that I have used previously who had a similar problem with the cooling fan running all the time, which according to them was traced to the aircon being overgassed?
