Dedra 1.8 i.e stall problem
Dedra 1.8 i.e stall problem
My 92 Dedra 1.8i.e. keeps stalling. The engine starts a treat every time and quickly settles to a steady 900 rpm on idle.
Re: Dedra 1.8 i.e stall problem
Sorry about that, pressed return by mistake! When I stop at junctions, etc the revs fade to below 500 and about 50% of the time the car stalls. Someone has suggested I try changing the fuel filter. Any ideas?

Re: Dedra 1.8 i.e stall problem
Does this happen all the time, or is it only when the car is starting from cold and disappears after restaring the engine. If so this could be the temperature sensor on the top of the cam cover on the distributor end (blue base). easy to change and reasonabley easy to obtain.
I had a problem with mine some years ago with the engine not picking up properly just before the thermostat opened, and the above cured the problem.

Thanks for the reply but the stalling happens all the time.

Hi Roger,
sounds like it could be a sticky idle control valve, these get a bit gummed up I usually remove it, turn upside down, squirt a fair bit of WD40 in and leave overnight to soak, turn upright and empty onto a piece of tissue or cloth to soak up excess, looking inside from underneath use a metal rod to push the centre valve up and down a few times, respray more WD40 (or similar) then wipe outand replace.
If that doesn't do the trick conct me on my email and I will see what else I can recommend.

Re: Dedra 1.8 i.e stall problem
I have exactly the same problem with my dedra as Roger, sometimes it will run fine but driving around town after about 10 mins it stalls every time I stop.
To date I have changed the rotor arm, distributor cap, plugs, leads and have cleaned the butterfly and throttlebody. But the problem is still there.
As the car runs on petrol and lpg and the problem is the same on both it suggests to me that the problem is not fuel related.
Would be grateful for any advice from anyone as it runs brilliantly on gas and the stalling is the only bug bear.
Also in the top left of the engine as you look connected to the bulk head at it there is a grey potetentiometer with an adjustable screw in it with the letters a b c on it and some zig zags on it can anyone tell me what its for and could this be anything to do with the problem
your help anticipation
Graham
Re: Dedra 1.8 i.e stall problem
Hi Graham,
Have you tried cleaning the idle control valve as I recommended roger to do? I believe it has helped his problem.
The little grey box is a fine tune potentionmeter for the co and is easily broken as it has very little movement, and being hamfisted with a screwdriver destroys it.

Re: Dedra 1.8 i.e stall problem
Hi Graham,
My problem actually turned out to be a tiny cut on the underside, ie not obvious, of the little vacuum pipe that comes straight out towards you, standing in front of the engine, on the injector unit. You can probably tell, I'm no mechanic!! Brian will probably put you straight with the correct technical jargon.
Anyway, changed the pipe, stalling stopped. Hope yours is as easy to solve.
All the best
Roger
