16v 'grale idle problem

Unread post by Themi »

I have a late 16V model and recently upon starting, the engine reved to about 3000rpm at idle. Initial guess was that a sensor had gone, therefore tried replacing the air temp sensor. This appeared to have solved the problem, but the over reving is obviously an intermittant problem because it soon returned. The temporary solution is of course to disconnect the idle speed valve (only problem is that until the engine is warm it revs very low, still drivable however).

If anyone else has encountered/knows about this problem I would like to hear any ideas.

Thanks in advance - Themi.

Did you try to clean this air valve? I had the same problem and solve it in by cleaning with a break clening spray and a good blow of compressed air. No more problem from 1 year on my 8V.

Sometimes, I have the same problem. I switch off, wait 10 seconds, switch on, and everything OK.
Where is located that air valve?

After speaking with a Lancia mechanic about this, he thinks it is just a case of the air bleed valve wearing out and sticking open. Cleaning it can help like JFP says, but there is no easy cure. There is also a self clean mechanism when you connect the Lancia test unit to the ECU which vibrates the valve open and closed. Mine did stick open once after I cleaned it like this, but it has been ok since. I think unless you replace the valve it is a case of living with it - like Carlos says it is often ok if you wait 10 secs and restart.

The valve is a small cylindrical shape located on the right hand side of the engine head block (on the 16 valve) when facing the car from the front.

Hi friends,

I like it too see how you al togheter think about this problem!!. You are right this electrical part neads some times cleaning inside. However the system do this also in case of start the engine.

I think you will find the solution inside the wire from the potentionswitch of the trottle, or the switch himself. Badly conection. It is also possible that the timing of the switch isn't right??

You can also check what happents when you put a papertclip inside the conector of the watertempsensor (computer thinks engine is 90 Celcius)

Bye-bye my friends

I have this problem on my 8v Grale.
I have changed the Temp. sensor, cleaned out the VAE valve (idle control valve) and cleaned out the idle control screw. Problem still there now and again.
