I have a 82 beta. until about a week ago it was running fine and then it started struggling the car will idle but as soon as i start driving it won't accelarate and then all of a sudden the fuel kicks in or i have to push the pedal to the ground for it to go and there is a heavy smell of fuel i have checked the fuel lines and installed new fuel filter and still the problem persists i think it might be the carb but i'm not sure any help would be greatly appreciated.

is it a volumex? If so I'd suspect blocked jets blowing through the jets with an airline would be my first action. secondly could be the wires in the distributor sensor unit breaking down the insulation breaks down causing arcing in the distributor and bad running
