Fuel gauge sender

Hi,
The previous owner of my Fulvia replaced the original fuel tank with an aluminium one as the old one was shot. It's a lovely piece of workmanship and there is an invoice for over £200 for it! However, it must be a slightly different shape as the gauge reads 3/4 when full and 1/4 when empty. Is there any way of recalibrating the sender?
Also, the gauge sways quite a lot when cornering and going up and down gradients. The tank has been baffled so is it just a "feature" I need to get used to?
Thanks,
Dario
