Can anyone please shed some light on the best way to remove the main window in a series 2 coupe (1971 818.631) door, do I need to get the quarter light out first, do I need to seperate the glass from the winding mechanism? What's the best way? Any info greatly appreciated.

the glass is secured to the up/down mechanism by 2 or 3 small bolts which need removing. You will have to undo the front and rear guide channels assuming they are not all rotted away. The front channel is also quatrelight so in effect most of the door comes to [pieces! You will need to remove the bright work on the top of the door as well which should just drift up of the door skin.

Thanks Tim. Sorry but I should've been more detailed as to what stage I'm at. The front and rear tracks are released and so is the winding mechanism, there just doesn't seem to be a hole big enough to take the assembly out of the door, I'm assuming there's a specific method/order of twisting and maneuvering the fwd quarter light and window winder/window assy to get them out.

The spindle on the winder is a problem, and the upper attach post on the fwd track is the other obstruction.

Got the quarter light out, slipped out easily seeing as I'd had a day away to refresh. Window not so easy still

Ok got it, just incase anyone wants to know, the window and track slid quite easily off the raise/lower mechanism with the window assy turned 90 degrees to normal with the window half out the opening at the top, ad a good look with a torch and mirror and figured it out, must've been tired last night.

Hey Tim...
I just went through this entire process on both doors to replace the window guide seals and the scraper seals. What a pain. Getting it all apart is not so bad - I see you found the trick of unscrewing the quarterlights and turning them 90 degrees. I had to pull mine out completely to replace the front seals of course.
The hard part was getting everything to line up perfectly again so that the windows would slide up and down smoothly and not "grab" at the new window guide seals. You may need to use spacers as I did to adjust the bottom screw position of the quarterlight/front guide. Also be careful that you don't bend your quarterlight guides. They have a very slight arch, so don't straighten or further arch them. Whether you do or not, you may want to look at this if you are having trouble getting it all lined up again.
I bought my seals from Omicron, who provided me with some good exploded schematics/drawings of the door that helped a lot. All is well now, but it took a couple weekends of frustration and tweaking.
Good Luck!

I had to carry out the same exercise with my 2c Berlina, if you think the coupe is bad, try the Berlina! I've got it figured out now, but like as Paul, inspiration came after a nights sleep, getting the whole lot back together was even worse needing at least 3 hands, however if anyone needs to do it on a Berlina I can help.
Problem is, is that it's such a pig of a job, I've put off replacing the weather strip on the other side until better weather next year.
