1600 Fulvia

Hi Guys,

I have just recently added a 1600 Fulvia to my collection. Well, It's a S2 1.3S which has had a 1600 fulvia motor installed. After sorting out the binding brakes and all the steering joints, I was eventually able to driveit, but it was very rough. So off with the Solex 42's and a good cleaning and now she literally flies, BUT.... she has a terrible flat spot around 2 -3000 rpm. Any ideas on what this could be, maybe the accelerator pumps. She also has a rather tiny rattling sound from the motor, could this be something to do with the timing chain and or tensioner?

In general however what is the difference between a 1300 S2 and a 1600 Lusso?

Other than the obvious engine difference, which has been pointed out, the main differences are cosmetics--both inside and out--weight, and gear ratios.

1600 Lusso bodyshells have flared rear wheel arches, and the license plate lights are on the rear body panel flanking the plate (as with all HFs) rather than on the rear bumper. The 1600HF wears 6 x 14 alloys with 175/80-14 tires (originally Michelin XAS) instead of the 4-1/2 x 14 steel wheels with 165/80-14 tires of the S2 1.3S.

Inside, the 1600HF Lusso has 'HF-style' seats with flatter cushions and with headrests, while the seats on the early S2 1.3s have the same cushions and the S1 Coupe and no headrests. And the rear seat on the 1600HF is a smooth bench (again, like all the HFs) rather than having the pleated seat cushion and seat back of the S2 1.3.

Other than the wheels and upholstery, I don't know what accounts for the weight difference, but the 1600HF Lusso is listed at 900kg, while the S1 1.3S lists at 970kg. And while the final drive and 5th gear is the same for both, the 1600HF has a higher 1st gear (i.e., lower numerically) and more closely-spaced gears from 1st to 4th.

You're probably right about the little rattling sound--my 1.6 has a slight rattle over 4500rpm. Can't help with the Solexes--mine was coverted to Webers long before I purchased it.

Oh, almost forgot; congratulations on your recent acquisition!

Other differences are a quicker steering box and longer lower wishbones to give some negative camber, plus a different front panel with more air vents and a rear bumper without number-plate lights. Instead they're either side of the number plate so you can take the bumpers off for competition.

Oops, sorry Ed, you've already mentioned the number plate lights!

No problem, John; I had indeed missed the quicker steering box. Regarding the fabricated negative-camber lower arms, however, if I'm not mistaken only the very earliest S2 1600HFs had these (yours included, IIRC); the vast majority of S2 1600HFs had the same stamped steel lower arms as the S2 1.3S.

I thought all 1600's had the neg camber tubular fabricated wishbones??

Re rattling noise - could be timing chain. But I changed mine (then quiet), but had a flat spot from 2-2500. Then I fitted var 1016 similar cams timed carefully with a dial guage and bingo no flat spot, very fast, and completely useable and tractable from low revs. BUT very tappety - so much so I am investigating now why this is. I may go back to the standard cams and time them carefully too.

Dont forget the oil temp guage on the dash in place of the clock......

I’m working from memory on the question of the lower A-arms--I’ve got an S1, so it’s entirely possible I’ll get something wrong about the S2s. But my understanding is that the A-arms and the “piggyback” 5-speed were both changed for the S2s, but that some of the early S2 1600HFs had one or both of these.

In any case, you’re quite correct about an oil temp gauge in place of the clock being another difference between the S2 1600HF and the S2 1.3S.

Incidentally, I can’t imagine why changing the timing chain would cause a flat spot, unless (and it’s a big ‘unless’) the timing was accidentally changed when the new chain was fitted.

All 1600's (1 & 2) had the negative camber wishbones (Sport did not), some early S2 cars had the Fanalone competition driveshafts (Johns car had these IIRC) and the later (last 200 or so) Fanalones had the S2 gearbox (no S2 cars had the piggyback box).

The oil temp gauge comes in two diameters (guess how I know !!).

Back on topic - the 1600 only has one interior light switch (drivers door) the 1300 has both driver and passenger door switches.
