No revs and running hot

Hi Guys, I need some expert opinions again. MY S2 Fulvia 1.3 s is just not revving freely and is very slow to pick up revs. She looses speed dramatically on any slight incline and tends to get very hot 180/190deg F when pushed over 90kmh. (Electric fan is working on an overide switch which I installed just in case)

Any suggestions welcome, as I don't really know where to start.

Seems like a wrong ignition timing, but I'm gathering info via this forum on that subject myself so what do I know;-) But have you done any maintenance on the engine before this happened?

Compression ok? I experienced the same thing some years ago which turned out to be a burned valve. You are not using any additive are you?

Head gasket ok? I use a tester which is held over the radiator.

If these tests are ok go on with ignition and mixture.

Hi Huib,

Compression is fine and so is head gasket. Would timing and ignition cause it to run hot?

You have loss of power and running hot.

I don't see how ignition timing could cause it to run hot unless it is very early resulting in detonation. This would be audible I imagine.

Maybe a very lean mixture could explain the running hot and loss of power. However a mixture that is so far off would be very difficult to ignite.

Do all cilinders react more or less the same to turning the mixture screws on the carbs?

Is the water pump working ok? If you take the filler cap off the radiator can you see the water racing by once the thermostat is open?

I believe *retarded* ignition can cause hot running, also lack of power, so I would definitely check ignition timing. This would include the static value, which should be 8 deg, and also proper operation of the mechanical advance system.

Thanks again. Water pump seems ok, water is running past. Maybe lean mixture and timing to far radvanced. Will check and report back

I agree - retarded ignition will definately run hot and have no power. I experienced this once on my merc which decided some cheap petrol was preigniting so continued via the ECU to automatically retard the ignition until the car hardley went at all. In that case it was a case of swithing off where the ECU rest it self and all was fine.
