Ally Oil Cooler housing

Unread post by LFW »

Cast aluminium housing part number stamped on the side: 818 342 2247 491

Looking to fit this to my engine but don't have the internals or hoses.

Is there a way to use this with a modern Oil Cooler ?

Probably can do without thermostat as the engine is for summer/competition use.

Advise appreciated.

Many thanks

You can use any hydraulic hoses and a mocal or similar (8 row?) oil cooler. Go to your local hydraulic hose shop - there is always one in a big town esp for agiculture - and they should have a range of fittings and hoses to set you up.

However, without an oil stat the engine oil will not reach its operating temperature. Do you have an oil temperature guage? I fitted such a cooler without a stat and the oil was always cool. Oil must be above 80 deg c to work properly and could lead to to higher wear of engine parts.

once, many years ago , while practicing for a high-speed-event in a (non-Fulvia) we noticed a dangerous rise in temp every time we went through the twisty-twisty- 2 & 3 gear twisty-bits & a drastic lowering of temp on the (single) straight of over 2km. Besides drilling some smallish holes in the front spoiler, to get better air flow to the (too small, but cheaply bought) cooler, we increased the length of the hose by, 1st removing the short-in-out hose from the oil-cooler & replacing it with about 3m of hose, snaking it from the out-attachment of the right-side mounted oil filter to the left side of the spoiler & back-again. Art Elfords, a Goodyear Technician, who owned the hose, tools & the drill & (Goodyear) track-side shop, started drilling larger holes in the spoiler without asking nor telling anyone what he was doing. He then snaked the hose in & out of these holes, so the hose itself was partially exposed to the air-flow.
Since we had a drill with a large hole-cutting attachment & since I was only standing-around watching the experts at work, I attacked the rear of all 4 fender flare with the drill, adding many holes, to let air escape from the wheel-wells & ( I assumed) to lower brake temperature. Also, to a very minor degree - lightening the car a tad. This was certainly outweighed by the weight of the extra oil & the weight of the hose
It worked very well & we did very well in that event (in spite of ?%§#! majorflamingprotests from some other teams. They were much larger teams with more professional operations & hated to not win, at any cost...especially to "us", since we were one of the few- "foreign-teams" & since we were "sponsored" by anyone except ourselves. They slept in Hotels; we slept in our ex-Military tent. Great fun !

I will be the 1st admit that it was the other drivers of this car who (usually) made up the time I (usually) lost each time it was my "turn" to drive. My major objectives were "don't break anything you will have to pay for tomorrow & don't kill yourself (or anyone else) today".

We later had to more-professionally mount the hose inside the spoiler or not be allowed to race anywhere.
We were racing in an "outlaw class", any car with any mod's was allowed (or many cars with no mods whatsoever...from the street to the track...and back to the street) but we were the most radical of all
(which caused many a howl of protest !) ...but that is another story from another time.
All cars still had to meet rigid safety standards, so there was no "junk"racing on the track at any time.
Excuse me...there was a lot of junk...but it was safe junk !!! Never a Lancia though ??
In early season & late season events or in the rain we had to tape the holes in the spoiler closed, so the oil would at least "get-warm".
As far as I know, that car is still in France...but how it got (tax free & in pieces) there is another story...
