Series 1 steel rims (tyres question)

What should be run on these rims? any reccomendations as the grip levels on what I am currently running is a little on the low side especially in the wet.
Not too worried about them having a rounded profile to make them easy to turn at low speed, arms need a work out and I have a nice large steering wheel.
thanks

Nick-
Since the original Michelins are no longer available, I ran 165R14 Sprint Vredesteins on a Series 1 Coupe I used to own and they seemed to work quite well, even in the wet.

Nick-
I believe so, but as I said, I sold that Coupe to a chap in California(San Diego) 3 or 4 years ago.
In other words, I can't run to the garage to check that for you(sorry).
I'm running original spec Michelins that I found on eBay on my Coupe right now.
Have not driven it in the wet, but in the dry, you know the car was designed with these tires in mind.
Ciao!

Nick,
The original fitment was 145/80-14. This size may actually be available in the UK (Longstone seems to have some by Camac, whoever they are).
If you go to a 165 it should be a 70-series, and a quick search didn't turn up any 165/70-14s available, but it was only a cursory search. If you run 165/80-14s, you'll be substantially changing the effective gearing--less acceleration, but easier highway cruising--and you'll be raising the roll center by 20mm. If you choose to do this, and you can rationalize spending GBP100 per tyre, Michelin XAS are available in this size--brilliant tyres wet or dry.

I am interested in any feedback on the Carmac tires (made in Portugal)
Here in the Netherlands availability for 165/70R14 is:
63 different summer types
11 different all season types
43 different winter types
I am not sure if it is ok to mount the 165/70 tires on 4.5" rims.

165/70R14 is what is on at the moment but not at all happy with them and will try and source some 145/80r14's, but not much has turned up on the internet so far, any ideas?.

Aside from the obvious cost-of-shipping factor, is there any reason (legal or otherwise) why I could not buy tires from a country that is rich in Fulvia friendly sizes (e.g. Huib's Netherlands) and import them into a land shockingly bereft of the correct sizes (e.g. California)?

Shaun,
The only legal issue I can see is that the tires must have US DOT approval markings. Absent that marking, you'll have trouble getting them through customs, and it's illegal to run them on the street. And the biggest problem with running non-DOT tires on the street is not getting caught by the authorities--it's the liability if you're ever in an accident while running them.
BTW, enjoy the Mother Lode this weekend. Sorry we won't be seeing you in Paso Robles.

Nick,
As I mentioned, Longstone has 145/80-14s from Camac

I have no personal experience with either Longstone or Camac tyres.
