Alu Doors - They Fit?

Hey Guys,

You all got me very nervous about replacing my s1 Fulvia steel doors with aluminium ones. I started getting even more worried when someone else in our club asked me if I would help him do the same.

So as the novice in the group (I think... only 2 years experience with Fulvia's), I headed off to my garage to try it out. Well, Well, Well, deary me, maybe you guys are trying to fit flaminia doors to your fulvia's. 30 minutes (really) and both doors fitted, lined up bolted in and open and close just fine!!!!

Any offers to pay my airfare to Europe from South Africa, some good wine (or I can bring some with) and I'll gladly spend some time doing the swap's for whoever needs it done........OR we can exchange favours because I really battle to get the best out of my carbs.

And remeber when you live 10m from the sea, steel is not the best option.

Go to our website and look at pics of the rust on my car http://www.lancia.za.org/the_laing_garage.htm

Happy door swapper!

Hi Phil

Great set of reference pics! But no shots of the all-important subframe mounting 'boxes'.

What worries me most is the seeming lack of bracing in the door apertures, before the cills were removed.
I know from my own experiences that the doors are reluctant to fit in a coupe with STRONG framework, so I'd be very surprised if yours went back in without a fight!

It is known that the alu doors were hand-fettled to fit into their original chassis, so no surprise that people often have trouble fitting them to later, or even contemporary cars.

All the best to Cape Town,
Jus

good news. Measured mine today and fitted. Offside. tight, but no need for major changes.
Nearside a different matter, due, I think, to an old injury to FNS wing. A bit of realignment of the door plate and it fits. Gaps are perfect, but so be it

Regards
Mat

In defence of all those claiming the fitting of alu doors to a car with steel doors is difficult - This problem exists if you try to fit an early series1 door to a late series 1 or a series 2, in so far as mounting the vent window is concerned

which seems a fair point, given that the other thread concerned fitting alu doors to an S2.

When restoring my '66 1200 HF bodywork years ago I had to replace the drivers door due to unrepairable collission damage. I had to resort to using a different alu door and it wouldn't fit! It was to long! Instead of trying to modify this door I took another door and that one was to high!. In the end I had to grind the bottom seam and reweld it which was not easy with this strange magnesium/ aluminum mix. It is still not a 100% fit but acceptable
So I think I can fairly claim that the postings of 'custom' finished for every single shell are correct.
