Valve Clearance and timing

Dear all

I thought I new how to do this (setting the valves and timing), but having had one bent valve I am now nervous and decided that I am rather useless! I have read the forums, but am very confused. I have seen the 2.2mm 'thread', but cannot work out at what point on the rotation to measure.!

I know the old rule wont apply, and I have tried with a small bulb across the coil, showing when each cylinder is firing, but then I get confused as to which valves to check and whether to use 0.15 and 0.25mm as opposed to the 2.2mm.
I can set TDC for #1 and obviously that is the TDC firing of #4 - so presumably I should check the clearances at this point on #1 and #4, using 0.15 and 0.25mm.What I cant then figure out, unless I use the bulb is TDC for #3 and #2. But if I use the bulb, this would be the ignition point and not TDC?

I appreciate that there have been threads about this, but I am none the wiser. I have the manual and spec, but cannot translate into practice. An idiots guide would be appreciated before I do any damage!
thanks
Mat

The cams on the camshaft have a base circel en a lobe. When setting either the valve clearance of 0.15 inlet or 0.25 exhaust or the measuring clearance of 1.0 mm on 818.100 camshafts or 2.2 mm on 818.342 camshafts the pad of the rocker should face the base circle which is more than 180 degrees of the camshaft. You can hardly go wrong. The lobe should roughly point away from the rocker pad.

What I do is very simple. When #4 is about fully open is set #1 etc
4 open, set 1
2 open, set 3
1 open, set 4
3 open, set 2
First the intakes, than the exhausts.

Note that the clearances are not measured between base circle and rocker pad but between tappet screw and valve stem (or push rod).

When doing the adjusting for the timing best screw all other tappet screws completely up and use only #1 valves.

Instead of setting it to the 2.2 mm I set it to 2.3 mm and use the 0.10 feeler to check for the opening (inlet) or closing (exhaust) point.

Many thanks. All set and she is running! A bit lumpy, but have yet to set the carbs .
I am grateful.
Now to work out the wiring!
