Hi All

I am a new Lancia Flaminia Touring 3c restoration project owner. I am very pleased with it so far and I do not intend to do much with it immediately as I have a Jensen 541 ongoing.
However the car has probably been standing since the mid 1970's and the engine is stuck. I have tried various concoctions poured into the plug holes but it will not budge YET!. I decided to relieve some of the stresses by removing the heads but first the inlet manifold has to come off. Am I correct in thinking that there are only 6 bolts (3 per head) fixing it to the heads? They all released but it will not come off. It might be just difficult gaskets or the 4 steel centre studs have some reaction with the ally inlet body. As these manifolds are I understand tricky to get I want to treat it with some respect. Can anyone confirm these studs are all that are holding it please?

Hi Jensen,

sounds like a nice project. I am restoring a 3C convertibile at the moment. Regarding the manifold bolts I am not 100% sure, but you have to find at least 4 per head. There are some bolts hidden below the carburators and maybe then even covered by the gaskets between carb (and the pertinax plates and the aluminum distance plates for the condensation drain) and manifold. The nuts are tricky to remove. At least German standard 14 mm tools are slightly too thick, so I had to modify one on the lathe.

Many thanks for your reply. There seems to be 8 long studs, 4 per head, see attached photo. The 2 centre ones are indeed under the carbs and the nuts are released so my guess is mine may have rusted a little and are causing the inlet manifold to stick a bit.The 2 outer studs have been removed. I'll have to keep trying with the penetrating fluid in the hope that the manifold will release.

Hi all once again,

I still have my Flaminia and although I've been working on other cars I am still collecting spares and tinkering when I can. I still have had no luck removing the inlet manifold. The 4 central studs appear to have had a chemical reaction with the aluminium and a stuck very fast. I've tried penetrating oils, coca cola, mild acid, heat but not much as I'm worried about melting the manifold and lots persuasion with various levers. Don't think there is room to get a stud extractor into the countersunk hole. Anybody else had similar problems?

Instead of removing the heads (there's a special tool for this) remove the rocker covers first and check if the valves are not blocked. Sometimes the valve stems get fixed in their guides... Pour penetrating oil on them and after a while see what happens.
