My Fulvia has a beautiful aluminium oil catch tank just like the works ones. However, the oil filler cap rotates freely and there is one offshoot pipe to the catch tank plus an open hole where you can see gauze/fire trap. The only way to undo the filler cap is to hold the gauze with a screwdriver through this side hole and twist the cap off. This is surely a mistake? What should the works filler look like?

The works filler is just an ordinairy filler. Black canister with plastic cap and one shoot-off. Instead connecting this shoot-off, as you call it, to the air filter box you connect it to the catch tank. There should be two vapour supply lines going to the catch tank. One from that cannister and the other from a shoot-off fabricated to the valve cover. The single is hose going from the catch tank to the street.

A word of warning about this component.

The steel gauze inside rusts away in the corrosive atmosphere of crankcase fumes. Gradually it breaks up and nasty pieces of rusty metal find their way into the works...

The solution? At Evolution Engineering I did a few of these; I cut the top off just below the lip and then remove the horrible mess inside. Then I would buy a stainless steel pan-scouring pad, cut to size and insert, finishing off by welding the top back on. A permanent solution.
