wiper motor

Looking for a windscreen wiper motor for my 69 Fulvia Berlina. I have stripped mine down and got it working (even after the armature and brushes had been sitting in rusty water for 15 years) but it does not have enough power to get the wipers across the screen and back! Maybe they are all a bit like that. or...can anyone suggest a modern motor that I can use and adapt to fit using the mounting plate...

I can do better than suggest an alternate motor; I've got a perfect, rebuilt berlina wiper motor and armature assembly that I'd be happy to sell.

Long before I got my HF, someone for some reason replaced the original Bosch wiper motor and arms with a Marelli berlina unit. The wipers never worked very well, but it doesn't rain much here, so sorting it was always a low priority. And of course it never occurred to me to check to see if it was completely wrong; I just assumed that it needed a cleaning at some point.

I recently had all of the electrics gone over, to fix all the bodges from pervious owners. The guys who did the work are incredibly detail oriented but they aren't Fulvia experts and, not recognizing that it was the wrong unit, they cleaned and completely rebuilt the motor, cleaned all the contacts and connectors, and powder coated the arms. It wasn't until it came back from the powder coater that I looked at it and realized it wasn't a Coupè unit at all. So I located a correct Coupè assembly and we repeated the entire exercise.

Meanwhile, I've got the berlina assembly--probably better than when it left the factory--sitting on a shelf, waiting for a berlina that needs a ridiculously good wiper motor. So it won't be dirt cheap, but I'll make a decent deal for it to go to a good home. Photos attached.

Alternatively, I've got a second berlina motor, not rebuilt but in clean used condition. Even cheaper.

Thanks Ed. Mine however is a Bosch unit and does not look anything like this. In fact after hours of browsing the nearest thing I've seen to mine is off a beetle. Square aluminium Bosch unit...

if no 1 else can come to the rescue; perhaps Tonto can ask Bosch if they can help; if you have a bunch of numbers & words from the housing, so Tonto knows what to ask for.
It is a long shot, but who knows ??
I could also ask German Fulvisti, who may not always/ever read vl-English forum;)

Not sure,
but recently I got a S1 Flavia coupé wiper motor in my hands,
I was an alumium box thing. Series 2 Fulvia wiper motors are like Ed is showing;
perhaps is the S1 fulvia berlina also a boxy thing?
I think the S1's have a single speed, while the S2's have luxurious B)- two speed option.

Maybe, Levoz, you can build the wire-loom into a double speed wiperthing?!

Thanks for your suggestions...The Motor is BOSCH part no 0 390 116 908. I'm not sure I can see how I can substitute Eds motor and mounts for mine...but I enclose pictures of mine and the mount. As I say, mine spins freely and apparently happily when not under load but as soon as I connect it up to the mechanism it fails to drag the wipers across the screen. When I originally opened it up the armature assy was rusted on to the magnet and steel side pieces. It required careful surgery to pull apart and rebuild but the only thing that is not original is the spring holding the brushes on to the commutator. This was salvaged from a faulty cassette recorder and carefully redesigned to replicate the exact tension of the original (just kidding). Is it possible that under load the brushes are being forced away from the commutator thingy.(that is the right word isn't it?).

The motor on your pics is the one I know from the S1 Fulvia's.

Did you measure the voltage at the terminals when it is wiping?
Any load increases the current it draws. If connections have become bad the voltage loss may be high.
The dashboard switch is often a source of voltage loss. The contacts are riveted together. Over time the resistance becomes very high. I always put some solder on it. Same goes for the contacts on the fuse box. The current also goes through the contact switch.

Is the ground connection ok? It should be connected to the M6 bolt at the bottom of the bracket under the bonnet hinge.

Also it is almost always necessary to clean and apply new grease to the spindles of the wipers and the bushes the spindles turn in.

Ah, well, I've got a spare Bosch 0 390 116 908, too. (pics attached) Not rebuilt, but good used condition. If Huib's suggestions cure the problem, let me know.

Re the Bosch wiper motor, has anyone managed to fit an intermittent switch unit to one? I have such a motor on my old Saab 96 two-stroke and neither of the two intermittent units I tried - one Hella, one an old British make - would work with the Bosch motor's curious wiring which seems to include two live feeds. Any ideas welcome.
