Generator light

The new year brings new issues.
My generator light is not extinguihing until about 2500 rpm. After start, at idle the light is on then at about 1500 rpm it gets brighter but does not go out until 2500rpm. Once the light is extinguished it does not come back on unless the idle falls very low, 700rpm.
So far it seems the charging system is working.
What direction should I aim my trouble shooting? Does this indicate a problem with the generator or the voltage regulator?

What type of Fulvia is it?
Or in other words does it have a dynamo or an alternator?

Most likely the regulator.
Note that a typical overhaul interval for the dynamo is 50.000 km.
You may want to check both or have them checked.
There is quite a bit of load on the bearings of the dynamo because of the long pulley and the two belts pulling.

Thanks, I should probably have the dynamo rebuilt before it fails...who knows when it was last done. The dash light must get the signal from the voltage regulator..can these be rebuilt? i.e. cleaning contacts?

Best take it to a Bosch service centre like the dynamo. If you are lucky they still have a new one. If they have plenty of new ones, let me know by email.

I looked up the Bosch service center, unfortunatly here in the USA they authorize local garages. I would not even let two of the three garages listed get near my car! There are other shops that speacialize in starter and generator rebuilds so I will try that route.

I am sure you will get your dynamo fixed by a specialist. I got my ducellier alternator rebuilt with new diode pack (made up) by my local shop few a very reasonable sum.
Do dynamos need polarising to work - I seem to have remembered something about this and the rather strange procedure to achieve this.
