Earthing

Hi all,
Besides the cable from the negative on the battery on to one of the studs holding the oil filler on to the engine, should there be any other earth from the engine to the body ?
Thanks
Steve

Ì believe the negative cable running form the '-' terminal of your battery should be connected to a gearbox bolt (a bolt joyning the gearboxhalves)
For extra earting it is an improvement if you run an extra wire from let, say the gearbox ,to the body. Since the whole engine/subframe assembly is mounted via rubbers under the body earthing is via the boltthreads only. An extra wire prevents a lot of strange electrical problems. It least on my car it has.

I have just taken some parts off a rusty pile of what remains of a Fulvia 3 today, there is another earth lead which runs from under the head of the four bolts which hold the engine stabiliser to the crank case, from underneath the carbs to inside of the wing under the voltage regulator, this is not a heavy duty wire but another good earthing point which may prevent the glowing light on the dash.

Yes, my S2 has this wire that Neil mentions, as I'm sure all S2s and S3s should have. It seems to be the only way that the battery earth terminal can be connected to the parts of the car that aren't mounted on the subframe i.e. all lights, wipers, washers, heater fan etc. So it's quite important.

You don;t say whether you have an S1 or S2 Fulvia.
The neg cable from the battery should be connected to the bolt on the gearbox directly behind the "Eifeltower". The bolt should be mounted "the wrong way" at least on LHD cars. I don't know where the battery sits on RHD cars.

On S1 cars the dynamo is electrically connected to the engine via its mounting bolts. On S2 cars the alternator is mounted in rubber / plastic bushes. There must be a thick wire from the adjust bolt to one of the M6 bolts holding the cover on the auxiliary shaft.

On S1 cars the earth from engine / dynamo to the body is a thick black wire from the dynamo to the voltage regulator. There is a short wire from one of the mounting bolts of the regulator to one of the screws fixing the mounting plate to the inner wing. A weak construction which has to be checked. The black wire from dynamo to regulator is underdimensioned (too thin for the possible 30 amps). Best check it completely. I find many that have all but melted away.

On S2 cars there is as mentioned above an earth wire from one of the bolts of the engine side support to one of the bolts / screws fixing the regulator bracket to the inner wing.

The subframe is electrically insulated from both engine and body because of the rubbers. Since the horns are mounted on the subframe it should be earthed too. The wire runs from the bolt fixing gearbox to engine between starter motor and clutch cable bracket to one of the 4 bolts fastening the bracket of the big rubber on top of the Eifeltower.
