I don't think this is right?

The attached file is a picture of the disc that goes outside the copper washer, at the end of the stubby driveshaft, on an S2. (Whew that was a bit of a mouthful!)
I'm assuming that the worn ring is not a design feature. I don't remember seeing it when I had the other side apart a year or so back.
Needless to say, the objective here is to stop a transmission oil leak past the splines and out under the washer.
Thanks as usual,
Peter

There shouldn't be any relative movement between the shaft and the flange. This will be a combination of worn splines and loose bolts.
When you re-assemble the flange assembly (on the splines) get them really clean, degrease and use a gap filling assembly compound like Loctite 638 on the splines. And do the bolts up tight.
Look in the Solution Guide

You started an earlier thread. See

The solution offered by Andreas is imho the only good one. Remember to put silicone rubber grease on the O ring and use locktite on the M6 bolts.

I have changed the settings. You can now upload tif files if not too large. Otherwise mail me the file and I will convert it.

Thanks Huib, you have a good memory! But that previous thread was for the setup on the other side of the car, which I was able to make leak-free after annealing the copper washer, cleaning, and reassembly. But I couldn't remember whether the disc looked like that, and hence my question.
I do like Andreas' solution, and if I can't get this side to seal properly with a new copper washer I'll definitely try it. Fortunately it's not too difficult to get in there for a second try if needed.

It is indeed a strange wear pattern. The photo is not too clear. For a second I had the idea that someone had tried to make a groove for an O ring.
If there is no play on the splines, you will be all right with the copper washer. If there is any play the copper washer won't work.

Well, that's a thought.
There was no O-ring in place when I took it apart, but who knows what might have have been done in the last 40 years? Also, I don't understand how that pattern could have been created by wear ... there's no sign of any damage on the hub surface. (By "hub" I mean the part that slides over the splines and connects to the CV joint with 6 bolts.)
If it *is* a deliberate groove, then it's a pretty shoddy job!
