Thoughts on what to do with Restore

I have a saratoga white 1.2 series 1 1969, needs a little work that is beyond my equipment here so was going to send her off for a professional restore, the thing is do I go for the back to new as much as possible, or does one race prepare the internals better brakes electric ignition etc and leave the interior standard or go the whole hog and strip interior and install roo cage etc...
Car as is is pretty good nick, original paint, interior a little shabby wine coloured seats which go well with the white body, engine needs a good overhaul, as does one or two niggles such as stearing box.
Is doing anything to a s1 in regards to race prep a waste of time and a shame to ruin a good car....
P,S I know its a bit of how long is a piece of string but race prep what kind of cost vs restore?

Sorry should add the car will be run in Ireland, over rough roads and I enjoy "spirited driving" hence the thought of the odd track day

It's always hard to give advice about to how someone else will use their car, but I think it would be a shame to ruin a good car. And in my opinion it's much better to use a "street" car for the occasional track day than to use a full race-prepped car on the street as a driver, even if that driving is "spirited".

Sort the engine, sort the steering, idler box, track rod ends, all suspension joints then get some nice compliant de carbon shocks (definately for the back and maybe konis for the fronnt but not set too hard). I fitted a full roll cage to my HF just a precaution against too sprited driving which stiffens the car up a lot but the disadvantage is that it takes over the interior.
With the 1.2 I am sure you will revel in the purity of the driving sensation rather that challenged by an out and out racer!!!
I am therefore with Ed and I suspect Huib...keep it as an original spec car.
I have just had my first post winter run in my 1.3S which is absolutely standard and loved its poise and energy.

with regards to the roll cage, is any space left to "squeeze" two small children in the back or does the bar necessitate the removal of rear seat etc rendering her definately a 1-2 seater?

I do indeed agree wit Ed and Tim. These cars are absolutely fantastic to drive when all original including the original size narrow tires. I would put my money in new sills and subframe mount boxes (and of course check the subframe itself) and the things Tim advises and make sure engine, carbs, ignition are exactly right.
There usually are some Fulvia's in the major historic rallys. Only once I have seen one get first price. That was a totally original coupe. Absolutely standard. In fact a 1200 coupe.

Roll cage loses the rear seat due to diagonal bar. I fitted mine through the rear cushion ( a rough spare) so it looked still like a 2+2 and indeed my daughter who was 14 at the time squeezed into the back for a short trip - not by choice but we needed to pick her up from a rally!!!
Tim
PS also note that fitting requires some adaption as the body does not present itself exactly to the rear mountings of the cage, and the front mounting need reinforced plates with captive nuts (so it can be removed if required.

Thanks everyone, helps to avoid silly and costly mistakes and ending up with a dogs dinner of a car!

from 1 Irishman 2 another, I must say that I enjoyed the humor of neustace; who I reply to now:
Man, you must be joking...". I agree with everyone who says "keep original" to which I add:
keep cheap, do as little as possible, at lowest cost...for a good job, don't go down a road-to-ruin, after all...from 1 fulvisti to another..."you're talkin Lancia Fulvia here & not Ferrari GTO".
Still, upgrade only if you have to replace some items anyway...if what you have is good (brakes, shocks etc) why not keep em ? if you were competing on a regular basis; I'd say "do all you can afford"
I'd also ask: are there Fulvia experts in Eire ?
in my experience....little kids never stay little for long....mine didn't
keep us informed of ...simply...everyzing ... so we can share the fun, sweat & tears:?.
if you read German you may want to look at Fulvia messages in the viva-lancia german forum; there are several fulvia "major projects" (semi-scary) being reported on...blow by blow...with lots of photos...by folks who (need to have a sanity check) who art doin it all themselves. Yikes !!!
certainly keep inquiring here; it is a great place to ask anything

; although some matters can be better placed in "ramble on"...which I've done enough of today.
