How heavy are 1600 HF's these days
How heavy are 1600 HF's these days
I thought I would start a new thread on how heavy 1600 HF's are.
Hopefully a few responses will tell me my Series 2 should go on a diet!!
In the UK I have noticed that cars are weighed as part of the annual roadworthy test. This may not be universal but my village garage does have this capability.
My 1600 S2 is 1080kg with 680kg on front axle. This is with full fuel tank, oil cooler, strengthend bodywork, full roll cage, fire extinguisher and grp3 arches (and some tools and spare wheel in boot).
My 1300 S1.5 weighs in at 1096 kgs with 684 kgs on front axle. Car totally standard and un restored (and no rust!).
This compares with S2 kerb weight of 900kgs and 970 kgs for s2 1300.

First time I've heard that one!!!, I'm born & bred in the UK, & in 50 years of driving I've never come across that as part of the MOT for private vehicles, commercial vehicles maybe, but not cars.

Tim,
"1300 S1.5"? I'm not familiar with the point five part. Does it have alloy hinged panels (doors, boot, bonnet) like my S1 (US spec '67 Coupe Rallye) or steel? Four- or five-speed gearbox?
You've made me curious. I think I need to find a place to weigh my car, but not until after I remove the excess of tools and spares currently residing in the trunk.
Regards

1.5 is essentially a series 2 with 5 speed box but series one front suspension/drive shafts but girling brakes just to prove how interchangeable things are.
Coming back to weight I now realise that my MOT weight data could very well have weighed the driver (MOT tester) at same time so assuming c 80-90 kgs + 40 kgs of fuel +20 kgs for tools and spare wheel + 20 Kgs for roll cage my HF is c 930kgs. But I remember it also has alloy doors boot and bonnet and no bumpers so still lardy.

Ah yes, the mysterious S1.5. That's what my HF is, too - see my first post on the Spring stiffness topic and Ed Levin's question.

Yes John so I saw. Does yours even have the large series one inboard CV joints?

Here in Northern Ireland, the MoT is run by the Govt and as such the tests facilites are rather fancy. One of the tests, for brakes weighs the axle weight. With myself & the tester aboard, I think the total of the two weights was around 1100kg for my 1600 HF Series 2 ( all steel, fully trimmed & carpeted, rear hoop, etc.)
So it was around the 950 mark. The only caviat is that it only weighed one axle at a time and the wheels being weighed were slightly lower ( about 3 inches) that the axle that was on solid ground, so to speak.
Plexiglass and no window winders would lose about15 - 20 kg ( certainly that;s what I lost in a Guila GTV)

Re: How heavy are 1600 HF's these days
hey, there were some perfectly good S1 parts left when they started building S2s; why let some official specifications get in the way?

Re: How heavy are 1600 HF's these days
Even though the thread's about 1600s I think i can contribute something on the weight of the lesser capacity HFs. I had my 1200HF weighed last month to aquire some weight distribution data and was suprised by the 610Kg front and 310Kg rear.bias. That was for a car and driver but only 2 gallons of fuel. No spare, jack or tools. I weigh about 85 Kgs fully dressed so would estimate the weight of my 1966 HF1200 to be about 830Kgs.
Light, but it should be lighter since power to weight ratio is a little less favourable due to the smaller engine.
