Advice before the plunge! (Delta)

Hi everyone.

I apologise if this has been covered elsewhere but I could not find a thread on it.

I am hoping to buy a Delta Evo 1 or 2 this spring as my annual mileage will fall to 10,000 (maximum).

However, reading up on the web it seems that ownership is fraught with horror stories.

Having previously run a 120,000 mile Dedra and three Thema Turbos as a family with very few serious issues, this does not tally with my experience of Lancia. Is the Delta a special case?

Could anyone offer an objective view of running a Delta on a regular basis in the UK in terms of costs & reliability? I'd need to rely on the car to some degree, although it would be a second car.

I know there is the old "if you have to ask" adage, but it doesn't really help!

All thoughts, advice and suggestions very much appreciated!

Enjoy your driving!

Tom

Tom,

There are a few threads on here about running Integrales, and I am sorry to say they are a special case.

Have you read the Integrale book by Paul Baker and Peter Collins, What you have to remember is that the Lancia built the Integrale for 1 purpose - to go rallying. The road cars were made because they had to, with only fitting a practical interior was a compromise.

I must say that I have not owned one, I went the route of buying a Delta 2 HPE HF instead, the running cost of 2WD more appealing. However while talking with other owners and John Brain of Bob Brain Developments there are something that come up regularly.

An Evo1 or 2 are now upto 13 years old - 1991 to 1994, buy the best unmolested one you can find which goes without saying. check for thing like whether the suspension bushes have been done, these make sure the car handle as it should, but need doing every 10-20K at £100 a corner. If you run them every day they seem to have less go wrong that one use for Sundays only.

Do not let me put you off, if I could have one as a second car, I would.

Regards

Simon
