axle weight

Unread post by bryan dugdale »

Hello all, can anyone give a definative answer as to the weight difference, between a series 1, and series 2 rear axle? I seem to think the seies 1 is lighter by some margin, many thanks, Bryan

I can tell you the difference between the two types of series one axles. All saloons and the 1200 coupés/zagatos and the last batch of 13S coupes had a full steel axle. Weight without hubs aprox 13kg. The ralley1.3 and all HFs and Zagato 1.3 had a steel beam with aloy hub carrier castings. These castings save about 3kg of unsprung weight compaired to the full steel axle.
I do not know the figure for the series 2 axle but I think the weight of the axle without hubs should be about the same as the series 1 full steel axle. The series 2 hubs are much havier compaired to the series one hubs however due to the cast iron handbrake drum.

More unsprung weight can be saved with the replacement of the steel wheels with magnesium wheels. About 4kg per wheel.

Good information, thanks.

However you should bear in mind - when comparing S1 and SII - that the S1 brake caliper is absurdly heavy; with the ahndbrake calipers a Dunlop rear caliper weighs about 5.5kg! (I do remember that SII front caliper with pads weighs 4.9kg).
