return spring for 5-speed

Unread post by Ed Levin »

About a week ago, the lever in my 5-speed gearbox decided it no longer wants to spring back to the 2-3 plane when the lever is released in neutral. Instead it drifts to a position between the 2-3 plane and the 4-5 plane. What should I be looking at to correct this? Thanks.

Ed,
Touch wood it's just the return spring on the end of the remote (see photos). You sould be able to see from underneath the car.

As Neil says, it sounds like the return spring. This was missing on my car when I got it, making gear selection a bit of a trial and error process!

You can get at the spring from under the hood, see attachment.

Thanks all, especially for the great photos. As you can tell from the title of the thread, I had suspected it was a spring, as that would explain all the symptoms.
