Steering box
Re: Steering box
Thanks Huib,
I have some play on the steering. When I purchased the car the dealer said it was the idler arm and had it packed with grease, Since then the play has come back. What sequence of steps should I take to ensure that everything is correct with the steering?

Re: Steering box
If you have an S1 car, the play may be in the canvas disc which is the linkage between steering box and the shaft to the steerig wheel.
The disc is not only canvas but there are also some spring steel sections inside. These may have rusted through.
In any case if there is play on the steering you should be able to see or feel where it is.
There is by the way a difference between play on the steering and the so called torque steering.

Re: Steering box
It is my series 2 car that has the problem. I haven't started working on my series 1 yet.
Re: Steering box
Huib,
I presume that you are saying that the steering boxes are interchangeable provided of course that the drop arm is changed?
As you know, the ball joint tapers are different between S1 and S2.

Re: Steering box
OK
Does the car change direction when stepping on the throttle or releasing the throttle? For instance when changing gears. If so this is called torque steering.
If the car goes to the right when relasing the throttle, the problem is on the right hand side of the steering box and vice versa.
The problem can be in:
- one of the track rod ends
- central track rod
- idler box
- bushes of the A arms
Packing the idler box with grease does not permanently solve any play in the idler box .
There is an adjust screw on top of the idler box. However if the bushes inside are worn this is not going to solve the problem. You will have to machine new bushes.
Tests that can be done:
- jack up the car. Put your hands at 9 and 3 o'clock on the front wheels and swivel them. Observe all the joints and bushes. Or have someone else move the wheels and put your hand on the various parts.
- leave the car on its wheels. Have someone else quickly turn the steering wheel left right left right and observe the parts with your eyes and/or your hands.

Re: Steering box
As far as I know the boxes are the same. The 1C and 1.6 boxes are different.
As you says the arms have to be changed and also the plastic disc and contact for the signalling light.

Re: Steering box
Thanks again.
It is not torque steer, but I will do as you suggest, hopefully only a small job rather than all the bushes.
I will also plan to check everything on my series one before new engine goes in.

Re: Steering box
Putting new bushes in the idler box is not a very big job.
There is also an adjust screw on top of the steering box. Do you know the procedure for adjusting it?
Sometimes one of the pins through the joints in the steering column goes bad.
