S1 Gearbox removal

How do I remove the rubber boot around the base of the gearlever in order to remove the gear lever? The carpet is extremely tight around this boot and even when I have managed to see past the carpet, there still seems to be something holding the rubber boot on.

The edge of the rubber boot is pulled over a lip on the metal "tunnel".

Just grip the rubber firmly and roll it away from the edge of the metal.
