Crankcase breathing

Unread post by Michael Beattie »

Had my 16HF out for its first hillclimb yesaterday, and noticed that it was pushing some oil out of the breather tube at the back of the cylinder head, I assume due to an increase in crankcase pressure.

Does anybody fit additional breathers to the engines and if so where?

Cheers

The previous owner of my HF drilled the front of the tappet cover and installed a right angle male fiiting. He then ran a hose to an aluminium catch tank, which was installed on the left hand front, inner wheel arch. Simple and effective.

Most of the factory rally cars had additional breathers, usually an aluminium tube welded to the back of the cam cover running into a catch tank. The normal breathing route on a Fulvia is really rather poor, relying as it does on a series of right anlgles from the timing chest, across the top of the engine and then down and up through the oil filler can.

The Fulvia does pump a bit it must be said; I was told that a modified 1600HF that was dry-sumped gained 5HP thanks to the elimination of pumping losses.
