Fascinating!

In 24 years of Fulvias I had never heard that 34mm Webers had been produced - of course I knew about the 32mm ones that were fitted to early cars.

Certainly a 1300 Fulvia engine should have bigger carburettors than 32mm, with 35mm Solexes being the norm as I am sure you know. I imagine that the Webers, if they really are 34mm would probably work well - of course you will need to know the choke size (depending on availability I would say 28 or 29mm would be best) and be prepared to re-jet them.

On the subject of carbs, I do know that 40mm Solexes were made and used on works 1300HFs - a pity Weber didn't make these too.

34 webers were standard on some 1200HF's The choice was 35 Solexes with 29 choke or Weber DOL 34 with 28mm choke.
On a standard 1300 S1 ralley they would work fine. On S2 cars I would prefer the 35 Solex with 31mm chokes. When taking quality into the equasion the choice would be Weber anytime over Solex if your car can cope with 29 or 28mm chokes.

Thanks William. I had thought that the 1200s were equipped with 32mm Webers - obviously it's time I refreshed my memory by looking at the technical data book!

Whilst I have seen plenty of 32mm Webers, I have never seen the 34s.

I agree entirely about the quality; my opinion on the Solexes is quite well-known: they are rubbish.

As I have written before, the tragedy was that Solex finally produced a good carburettor just before the company collapsed. It was similar to the Weber DCOE or the Dell'Orto DHLA - and many consider it to be better than these. It may be found sometimes on FIAT Strada-Abarths.

Paul,

I had a Fiat 130 Abarth with the Solex 40mm carbs. They were indeed pretty good and could be set up accurately. Do these carbs fit on a fulvia manifold?

No Christopher, they will not. They are the same size as Weber 40 DCOE or Dell'Orto DHLA.

You would need a special manifold or adaptor to use them.

The 40mm Solex carbs are also found on 105 series Alfa 2000GTV quite often. I agree with Paul - really good carbs. They give excellent throttle response, the progression geometry and jetting seems to be pretty much spot-on. Lots of them were taken off Alfas and replaced with Webers - better name I guess!
