Solex confusion
Solex confusion
Hi everyone!, shamefully i am not a lancia owner but i drive a little volvo which i thought i should buy some twin carbs to give it a little kick in power, problem is ive got here a set of twin solex carbs from a fulvia, i am not really sure what manifolds will bolt onto these carbs as im hoping for weber twin carb fitment or anything easy to get and cheap what will fit these carbs, other quick problem is i dont know what size these carbs are (32's ,35's, 40's?, havnt got a clue), i can take pictures if it helps atall?

Re: Solex confusion
Look on the tops of the carbs above one of the barrels: you will see a number and some letters stamped there: the number tells you the size. If they are the more common 35mm ones, it is likely that the idle mixture adjustment screws will be linked by a plate that also has a number: 818-302 means 35mm with 29mm chokes. 818-303 means 35mm with 31mm chokes.
If they are the 42s and in reasonable condition - i.e. WITHOUT about half an inch of play in the spindle bearings, then sell them and buy some decent carbs - Webers or Dell'Ortos!
Fitting the Solexes to your car would be a nightmare really as they are very narrow between centres.

Re: Solex confusion
they seem to be runnable as they came straight of another car which was a fiat 1300, it has the 818-303 numbers so that helps (just could barely read them), is there any types of manifolds that will and wont fit these as i will need to fabricate the manifold.

Re: Solex confusion
No they didn't come from a FIAT 1300; they would have been fitted to a Series II or III Lancia Fulvia Coupé.
The Fulvia engine is installed at an angle of 45 degrees so the inlet manifold is not going to be much use unless you can weld aluminium and are prepared to do some cutting and fabrication.
Otherwise you will have to start form scratch.

Re: Solex confusion
sorry i meant the guy fitted them from a fulvia to a fiat 1300, is there not any other manifolds on ebay which would fit?, can be from any car all i need is the connecting plate thingys from the manifolds what fit to the carb and the rest will just be thrown away.

Re: Solex confusion
I don't really understand the question.
As I said only the Fulvia as far as I know, used these carburettors. T here was a steel-and-rubber mounting that fitted between the carburettors and the manifold; these are available from LAncia specialists. You could probably find a Fulvia manifold easy enough, but as I said before you will have to do some clever cutting and welding - and make a new manifold for your own car.
Remember also that you will have to address the jetting issue. Solex went bankrupt years ago - unfortunately AFTER the Fulvia was made, so you will have to drill out the jets as necessary and probably solder up the air correctors and re-drill them to suit your car. As for the emulsion tubes, your guess is as good as mine.

Re: Solex confusion
The Solexes were made for an exceptionally short engine. They are not a very good choice for a traditional in-line four. It would seem to be a lot more reasonable to look for a set of carburetors commonly used on a large number of models. As Paul has said, the Solexes are unique to the Fulvia and the company that made them no longer exists. Surely you can get recommendations on a Volvo owners' board.
Re: Solex confusion
If I can believe my good friend Ernst Thierfelder this solex are also used on simca rally 1 +2

Re: Solex confusion
I have also been told that there was some Renault or Alpine-Renault that was fitted with Solex 45 DDHFs - you know the "Indian Rope Trick" carbs there were fitted to the VAR 1016...
It may be of interest that I was told some years ago that the rights to the design of the Fulvia-type Solexes were sold to Mikuni in Japan.. I was told that Mikuni produced a range of these up to 40mm.
And unlike Solex, they made a proper job of it, with the main jets removable from the top. I have never seen any however. Someone did say that one of the Mazda rotaries had such a carburettor, but I have never seen one of these either.

Re: Solex confusion
Sorry, Paul that you are so confused about my comment. Maybe i was not exactly enough because
my english is not so perfect.
I have read your answer three times to understand what you mean
)
Ernst told me, that he use this carb. on his Simcar Rally inside the european touringcar championchip in the 70ty´s.
The only thing is, that i have didn´t see it personal. But he is absolut sure about it.(www.eth-tuning.de )
Maybe some of the simca fans can confirm it.
have a nice day and best regards
