safety belts

Unread post by jan »

I want to install lap & diagonal safety belts in my 1st series Fulvia Sport. However, there are only two anchorage points: one just under the (rear) side window and one on the floor in the middle behind the seat. Looks like only diagonal belts were foreseen at the time. Has anyone ever fitted additional anchorage points? I presume, the regular coupe also had only two points, so experiences with coupes are welcome too.

I don't know about the Zags but in the coupes there is a 3rd anchorage point at the site of the rear floor pan just below the sill

I have recently fitted lap seatbelts to my 1972 S2 Coupe. I used NOS belts from a 1970 BMW 2002 as they look period correct. I am quite surprised that Lancia did not supply seatbelts as standard equipment in 1972.

My Fulvia CD's show mounting points for the seat belts, including two points above the rear seat near the C-pillars. I do not know if these are on the S1 cars, but on mine they are filled with plastic plugs (blanks).

I also installed new Halogen sealed beam headlamps and am very pleased with the brightness.

Huib is right, there are mountings in the floor in the Zagato too. By the way, Securon make an adjustable inertia belt that can be mounted at any angle, so will fit. Put the reel on the upper mounting point, with the belt coming off it horzontally forward. MUCH more comfortable than a static belt.

Thanks Huib & Neil, I suppose I lost an anchorage point when the floor in my car was renewed.
I am aware of Securons offering, that's how I came to suspect that I had one anchorage point too few.

You can easily re-instate the missing point. All you need is a reinforcing plate to spread the load under the floor, then nut & bolt woth the plate underneath and a large flat washer insider the car.

From a mechanical point that would be the optimal solution, but I am reluctant to create an extra rust trap underneath the floor. By welding a reinforcing plate to the floor inside I will not have that problem.

Actually Jan, you might not have lost a mounting point. For a number of years, I owned a 1968 Series one Zagato imported from the U.K. that had only the diagonal belt as its original equipment. This was one of the early steel-bodied Zagatos. Fortunately I never found out how the belt worked in an accident.

I did have new floors from Bill Lewis welded in, and now it's too late to tell if the mounting points went on the rust heap together with the old floors.
