Coupe quaterlights

Unread post by Julian »

I am current restoring an early RHD series 2 1.3S Fulvia Coupe circa 1970. Currently the car is fitted with an opening front quaterlight on the drivers side and a fixed window on the passengers side. Can anyone please confirm if this is the correct specification for this car or has it been fitted with a new window/door in its long life.

Many Thanks

The series 2 should have opening quarter lights on both sides.

As you suggest, the car must have been fitted with a new door / window or rather an old door as the doors with the fixed quarterlights are from the s1 1200 coupe or the s1 rallye 1.3. If the door is from the latter it is aluminium.

A couple of notes on this.

My coupe is an early one (probably made in 1966) it had steel doors originally - the aluminium ones came in with the "Rallye" series.

The only S1 cars with opeing quaterlights were the 1.3S models from 1969/70

I am the happy owner of a 1969 S1 coupe with the 1231cc. engine, I do have aluminium doors, boot and bonnet, this is I believe a type before the Rallye.
So was this an extra or just one of Lancia's many changes in the range?

To all a very happy 2@@4, keep them between the lines, greetZ Henk, HOLLAND

I think that all the late S1 coupes had aluminium panels.

I have never seen (in 21 years of Fulvias) a 1231cc engine. Neither have I managed to find out the reasons for Lancia making both the 1216 and 1231 engines - and where they were offered. Certainly, plenty of 1216s came to England.

What is the performance like with the 1231 engine? Does it have the same flywheel fixing as the 1216 - i.e. four 8mm bolts?

Best wishes

The series 1 Rallye 1.3S had steel doors in the end.
So far all Rallye 1.3S cars that I have seen had steel doors. Some say that the early ones had aluminium doors. If so there are 3 types of alu doors:
1.) rallye 1.3 doors with fixed quarter lights and courtesy light
2.) rallye 1.3S doors with opening quarter lights and courtesy lights
4.) 1.6HF doors with fixed quarter lights and no courtesy light

The transition from 1216cc to 1231cc might have happened with the arrival of the 1298cc engine. The 1231cc has the same stroke as the 1298cc while the 1216cc engine has the same stroke as the 1100cc one.

This may also explain that you don't see many 1231cc engines in the UK. If there was no road tax penalty in the UK on the larger engine like in Italy, the import of 1200's may have been replaced entirely by 1300's.

An other note on the alu doors

If we do assume that the rally 1.3S had alu doors, bonnet and boot lid in the early stages and steel in the later days, one might wonder what the reason was for changing from alu to steel.

One reason might have been cost. If the change happened just before the bankrupcy in 1968 and the Fiat take over, Lancia was already running out of money. If it happened after the Fiat take over Fiat may just have told them to change to steel.

Another reason might have been the problem of cracks in the aluminium. Aluminium is nice but it does crack easily. I still have to see the first alu bonnet which has not cracked from the mounting holes to the opening of the air scoop. Also the doors crack easily on the four top corners.

My understanding was that all the "rallye" coupes up to the FIAT takeover had aluminium panels - and they were optional on FIAT-built HFs to special order. The 1.3S , 1968 - early 1970 had opening quarter lights. Of course later in 1970, the S one-and-a-half cars appeared with steel panels.

The "open-door marker lamps" were removed from the 1.3HF and 1,6HF (S1) for reasons of weight saving.

My 1966-built coupe was not a "rallye" i.e. it had all steel panels.

My '69 1.3S has alum doors, bonnet, boot, as well as opening quarterlights and courtesy lamps...

it is a RHD ordered from here in australia, but delivered in turin to the original owner who drove it around the continent for a vacation period before retuning with the car to Australia

p.s. Huib, there are no cracks in the Alum panels either....:-)
