Flavia fuel injection
Flavia fuel injection
I have an 1800 Flavia PF coupe with fuel injection. The fuel pump has been proving very inconsistent despite renovation. Any suggestions and apologies in advance to purists but does anyone know of a modern equivalent which I could use instead?
Re: Flavia fuel injection
I know pretty much nothing about kugelfischer injection systems (I have a 2000HF with the (relatively) simple BOSCH D-JETRONIC) but I would observe that if you are not already a member joining the flavia and 2000 consortium would not be a bad idea as it is a good way to access a lot of relevant knowledge in the UK.I do have the workshop manual for the injection system (also the 815 manual and coupe supplement) so if you have any specific queries please mail me although note that it is quite a big book! And I also might be a bit slow replying.
Re: Flavia fuel injection
Alex,
What do you mean by inconsistent, and is it the actual fuelpump(that provides the fuel under pressure to the Kugelfisher system, or the system itsself ?
If it is the fuel pump in the strict sense, first try to replace both the fuel filters, one is the obvious one under the hood, close to the pump, but there is also a second one, hidden behind a small hatch under the spare wheel in the boot.
I had trouble with my fuel system and replacing the filter in the boot was the remedy.
I don't know a modern replacement for the pump, but I run my Flavia on a pump out of a Peugeot 504 injection (the estate model)
It is a Kugelfisher PLF-6, yes I know it's not original but it works fine.

Re: Flavia fuel injection
Alex,
As Bert told you, the filters are probably the first thing to look at. If you are talking about the AEG fuel pump, the orange light on the dashboard must indicate if it delivers the right pressure (about 1.2 bar), and if the pressure is good, the main fuel filter (at the front) can be the source of your troubles.
Injectors can also be a source of troubles, and you can easily check if your pump delivers fuel to the four of them ; remove the plugs (just to make your engine turn free) remove the injectors, put every hose in a clean can and run the electric starter, you must see fuel in each can after a 10 seconds run ; if you have fuel in each can, check the injectors, clean them (anyway, you can't adjust them) and let us know !!!
I have never heard about a modern reference of pump to fit in place of the KF one, I just know that you can change the electric pump to a modern one if necessary (one of my friends did it).

Re: Flavia fuel injection
Thanks Gentlemen for your helpful suggestions - have cleaned out the fuel filters to ensure that fuel delivery isn\\\'t a problem going into the pump and the car is definitely running fine on all four cylinders, so I think the problem is the AEG fuel pump not the KF injection system itself. What I think I\\\'d like to do is to replace the pump with a modern one.
Alan - do you have any contact details for the Flavia consortium?
Bert - thanks for the tip-off re: the KF PLF-6
Florent - as you say I need a pump with 1.2 to 1.4 bar (18 to 21 PSI) delivery. Would be very grateful for the name or model number of the modern pump your friend fitted...

Re: Flavia fuel injection
Hello Alex,
I revised an AEG electric fuel pump for a friend (he owns a 815.430-I have a 815.330) and the only weak thing I found was the plastic castle supporting the coal brushes. I think this castle could twist when working, under its proper heat combined to that of engine bay. Hence brushes loose contact, pump stalls, low pressure orange light glows. I am speaking about the first type of AEG pump fitted to Flavia iniezione; later cars had another type. Ciao, Carlo
