Hi,

I changed some track rod ends and also a damaged track rod on the front axle of my Flavia and it now needs to be adjusted. The datas I have about the front wheel position adjustment (workshop manual) are not expressed in degrees but in millimeters and also mention to use a special tool.
The fact that I changed a track rod must have modified the angle between the two wheels (sorry not to be able to use the right word in English, it's called "pincement" in French, if it can help...).
Does anyone gave his car for such an adjustment and could give me the angle I'm looking for.

The special tools needed for measuring the "toe out" of your front wheels, is a distance bar, that most old fashioned garages have lying about.
So find yourself an old village garage and he can do the job.

As far as I know the manual states that the toe out, ( front of the wheels, wider apart than rear) should be between 1 and 2 mm, measured on the wheel rim
I measured the wheelrim of the standard 15" Flavia wheel and it is 410mm in diameter.

Using those two sizes and taking for granted that the wheel turns along it's centerline you can calculate the angles you need

1 mm toe out means that each wheel at the rear is 0.25mm from straight towards the inside of the car, and at the front 0.25mm from straight towards the outside
half wheel diameter is 205 mm
the angle follows from the formula angle = arctan(0.25/205) = 4.2' (minutes, 1/60 of a degree)
at the other limit 2mm all sizes double and at these small angle so does the angle
so arriving at 8.4' (minutes
So the angles you are looking for is minumum 4.2' and max 8.2' toe out per wheel
Note that left and right wheel should have the same angle

Many thanks for this informations but, the fact that the angle can be from 4.2 to 8.4, makes me feel like the original way of adjusting was not very precise.
A 4.2 degrees range, isn't that too much to have a correct adjustment ?

Watch out !
I calculated a 4.2 minutes range, a minute is 1/60 of a degree !
So 4 minutes is about 1/15 of a degree, hardly noticable by the bare eye.
