Scheibenwischer
Scheibenwischer
this may be the silliest question ever posted in viva lancia; but I will post it anyway....since i may wish to drive my Fulvia Zagato again sometime... & it will probably be raining. I noticed on the benelux Raid that I had less-that-fully-effectice wiper blades.
I though "OK, when I get home I will just run (walk/drive) over to the local'ish auto-parts stores & buy new wiper-blades, real cheap. I'll take the originals along, in case someone wants to look at them, before selling me a set that don't fit..
So, I did. Remove them, that is !
I immediately discovered that they aren't "everyday standard blades, nor are they mounted on everyday standard wiper -arms". Honestly, I never really looked that close before.
Since I was going to a certain town a few days later - anyway- where a certain car-shop has (always) some interesting Italo-Cars, including their own Fulvia.....I stopped by..only to discover that they didn't have any wiper blades in-stock, nor did they know, immediately, where to order them.
So here is the silly question, in case you have not figured it out yet.
What falls faster ?
a ton of apples or a pound of bricks ?
Ha ha...sorry, that isn't the real question, is it ?
The real question is where does a Fulvia owner, mid Euro located, locate a set of ww blades ?
Thank you in advance for any replies.

Re: Scheibenwischer
Huib may still have a few sets of Trico's left. I bought a set of wiper arms and spare blades form him a while ago.
Your obsession with Claire borders on obsessive, explain...?

Re: Scheibenwischer
I was teamed with Claire on last years Benelux tour; to my great pleasure.
Claire expalined why (some/many) Fulvias have "feminine names" & that hers has a name (which I have forgotten, but it may be Rosewita (her Fulvia is Rose-Red).
I also know that a # of other contributors to this forum have attached "ladies-monikers" to their beloved little-screamer (which is actually more what my car is ... a little-screamer & not a gentle Claire).
Thus, therfore & thats how/why I decided that, "hey...what the heck...if my Fulvia needs to have a "girly" name, it should be the name of the only Female-Person who has been in my Fulvia since I owned it".
All the other girls (ladies!) I know are either a) too smart b) too scared to ride in "such a little, loud, unsafe, uncomfortable car "...or so they have told me.
Claire may also think my car is "little, loud, unsafe, uncomfortable", but she - of "no-fear of nothing" (thats what she told me anyway) - rode in it & managed to keep us on-course (more or less) for 2 days...in spite of my driving! That heroic feat deserves recognition. It is better than "Fulvia as in Brunhilda", isn't it ?
Not that I know or ever knew a "Brunhilda".
At our house " we "guys" jrefer to "Claire" (the car) "the Fulvia" & have never referred to it as Claire.
I hope this explanation makes as little sense to you as it does to me (& Claire)

Re: Scheibenwischer revisited
I just remembered...after the 2007 Tour I wrote about my decision to give my Fulvia a name...maybe I will go back & read it again soon! To refresh my (fading) memory !!
Also, Huib..if you read this...let me know if you have wipers ! Thanx.

Re: Scheibenwischer revisited
Of course I have wipers. Original made by Carello under license Tricot. These are rare. Very rare.
Re: Scheibenwischer revisited
having "eyeballed" the wiper rubber & the multi-piece supporting-bows today, I read the "fine-print" & discovered that the stainless steel bits were Trico produced (as you have already said) in RSA.
Quite a long distance from Torino (& everywhere else, almost). Eyeballing the assembly closer, I saw that the stainless steel inner-bow spring isnt actually 2 seperate tensioning pieces (so the wiper blades are not totally without a backbone) as I've seen on many other assemblies, including my current (small) feleet of Italo-
vehicles. EZ to remove & ez/cheap (relatively) to replace. I've sucessfully replaced "only the rubber- blades, using the original inner bow-spring (I am not sure this is the correct nomenclature for these pieces?) & saved some pennies.
What I don't know is of the "pop-off" rubber-blades that I removed, without injury to myself or the stainless steel bits, today are also ez'ily sourced at the local "every part under the sun" parts-store.
I could drive 2 in the area by tomorrow AM (by which time I'll have forgotten that I wanted to drive by), with variois wiper pieces in hand or ask for advice here, before I:
a) embarres myself tomorrow, by even going to a store
b) buy the wrong blades; which would be even more embarrising.
Having said that, I want to go on record as saying that "I've always admired the engineering & quality of construction of wiper-assemblies; they seem to me "ingenious" little items.
The Fulvia assembly (perhaps other "older Lancias as well"; I can't say for-sure) seem to take this to the level of being "Art". Typical (old) Lancia
However, the blades I'vebought for my Gamma were standard items, black where they should've been ss,
but they "do the job" & anyway...no one expects a "mere" Gamma to be perfect...whereas a Fulvia......is another story.

Scheibenwischer revisited again
May I reply to myself ? Yes ! Thank You.
Today I went to the auto-parts-store, because last night someone decided to steal the wiper blades from my Fiat Scudo, parked in front of my house. Since I was at the store I bought a "universal wiper set"; that looked like they would fit the Trico bows.
Well, fumbling with them today in the office, 1st manually (very little progress was made) & then with tools ( I left the air-hammer & vice-grips in the shop ) I got them on, I think !
All it took was a lotta patience, some radical trimming, major stretching & a few "repeat-all-again-efforts"
It isn't what my Dad would call "a job to be proud of", but they are mounted, I'll report again if they prove to be ineffective or fall / fly off the 1st time it rains. Actually I'll go test them with a water can in a few minutes, so I know if I have actually achieved a "temporary fix" or just wasted some time.
It certainly isn't a 'permanent solution'...........so I now "request a price" for a new set.
Cheers , John

Re: Scheibenwischer revisited again
Not so rare i guess...
I bought a pair at Martin Willems just half a year ago, he had several sets in stock (read a lot..)
They exchanged owner for € 12,- so that's not a lot is think!
Tomorrow i will send him a visit for my clutch-cable broke this afternoon..
Mannaged to make it home with a rope tight to my clutch, send in to the the driver's compartment through the side-window...
This was a though job to handle, but i made it (again!).
Thamnn, you don't know how much stranght the clutch require's! (hands still sour..)
Not tomorrow but the next saturday i will have a test-drive in the new Delta, annyone have anny experiance?
Nice weekend all!
Jasper Brand.

Scheibenwischer revisited again & again
Hello Jasper,
thank you for a (not so funny) report about your clutch. I am not sure "how you did what I did" !
You will have to post a sketch, with arrows showing in which directions you had to pull the clutch / a detailed scientific diagram. Was it "from under the (opened) hood (engine cover) or from under the floor?
Also, please explain if you were able to depress the clutch normally, in order to engage the gears.
I've driven a car(s?) where I had a cord tied to the clutch pedal...to pull it up..(I can't remember which car(s), nor when ( it must have been a very long time ago) nor for how long I did it, but I do remember doing it)...pushing it down wasn't a problem. I can't even remember if it was my car or someones elses car.
I guess this all results from "having lived a long long time" ! Halalulja !! Thank You Lord !!!
Concerning wipers...you wrote: "They exchanged owner for € 12"...do you means that " I will send them my multi-piece wiper-arm bows & they will send me back other (or the same) bows with the wipers mounted.
Perhaps I did something "unintelligent" yesterday...I mounted the blades onto the existing stainless-steel hardware / the piece that actually gives the blade a backbone, completely ignoring the black-plastic "backbone" that can in the box.......I will check in a few minutes if they would have made the entire procedure less of an "adventure". Not that it compares to your clutch adventure !!
Did you already have a rope in your car ? John
