Has anyone successfully replaced their shockabsorbers, for a more modern but compatible variety? Otherwise, is it a question of stripping and refilling the old ones with oil? If so, what oil do I use? Are seals available?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Dave,
Try Omicron, link at the top left of this page, then under parts department/flaminia, as they advertise having had a batch of Koni shock absorbers made. This site doesn't get updated very often so they may not have any left, but it's worth a try. You could try the other links to Cavalitto and MARA too.

The workshop manual recommends Pegasus Mobilfluid 62, and a local lubricant supplier here in Australia, called Penrite, recommended their Shocker No. 1 (I asked for recommendations on all the fluids and lubricants in the manual).

Do you happen to have their other recommendations on fluids that were recommended in the manual?

Sometime, we need to pull this info together again, with modern fluids, as well as older type fluids still available. I'm going to try doing this for the Aurelia, albeit slowly.

Yes, suitable updates for Flaminia (or Aurelia) lubricants has been a long-standing mystery.

Recommendations were as follows:
Engine oil: Classic Light for intermittent use, HPR 30 for regular.
Transmission: Mild EP gear oil
Axle shaft inner joints: Transoil 250
Steering gear: Mild EP gear oil
Bearings, Wheel Hubs and Steering Linkage: High temperature wheel bearing grease
Grease fittings: High temperature wheel bearing grease or Molygrease EP 3%
Ignition Distributor: No recommendation (I'm running a modified Chrysler Valiant AP5 distributor by Bosch Australia)
Brake system: No recommendation, no cross-reference available for Wakefield Crimson or SAE 70 R 3.

All products recommended above are Penrite equivalents, I don't know if they're distributed to the US.

The problem is not the oil, but the gaskets inside! If you replace the oil but not the gaskets it will be a useless job. Best is to find similar shocks that are commonly available. (or have them adapted)
