I am trying to find a replacement for the ignition coil for my Appia series 3 sedan. I suspect that the coil in there now is bad since when the engine gets warm, there is a "misfire" like under acceleration or load.
The stock original coil is a Marelli B 17 L. I am having a hard time finding one that is a direct replacement, I really do not need an orginal. I did notice some modern coils that are high performance but I was wondering if they would be too much for the car.
This is the description of one that I found:
high performance coil is for all 12-volt systems. Delivers up to 40, 000 volts. Oil filled for better cooling and voltage insulation. Enables larger plug gap for greater fuel efficiency and more power.
Any opnions on this one or sources for a replacement.

Did you change the condenser?

If you are not racing the car nor rallying nor revving it over 6000 rpm there is no benefit in a coil of higher performance. Coils are not magicians who create new energy. If it delivers more energy it means it draws more energy and your contact points will have to carry the higher load and wear quicker.

If there is insufficient data about the performance level of the coil a good indication is the diameter of the coil. The physical laws that lower resistance requires thicker wire and higher voltage requires more secondary windings are valid for all manufacturers of coils.

If it is oil cooled it means the coil has to be mounted absolutely vertically, either upright or upside down. If not mounted vertically some windings will not be covered with oil and burn. Coils that have a compound inside can be mounted in any position. If in doubt, shake the coil. If it is oil filled you ill here it.

Thanks for the info. I did not think that I needed a such a high performance coil, but it is the only one that I have found. I will keep looking since I really don't need to change points more than I have to.
I did change the condensor along with everything else, points ect. It is still the same problem when it gets hot.

Put the coil in if you have it and see how things go.
